Job Description SummaryBecton, Dickinson and Company Bioscience Informatics (FlowJo) in Ashland, OR is seeking a Senior Applications Specialist to join our Technical Resources and Research Support Team. The successful applicant must be a self starter and have a versatile skill set, willing to collaborate with both the team and customers, or to work independently to solve problems that may be scientific workflow or technical in nature. Candidates will be versed in software, passionate about science, have a strong desire to help customers solve problems with a positive attitude, and be capable of teaching/demonstrating our unique feature-set to a wide range of user proficiencies.

Job Description

Technical support personnel at FlowJo are responsible for effective communication to the customer base through: email (including written and graphical modalities), phone calls, video conference calls and in research collaborations. Other duties include and are not limited to - testing, documentation, product development, collaboration with other departments (software engineers, quality assurance, marketing, information technology, sales, and licensing staff), and a willingness to go the extra mile.. Applicants must be legally permitted to work in the U.S.

Required Experience:
  • Laboratory experience in biology, chemistry, immunology or similar.

  • Interest and experience in computer science and coding challenges.

  • Demonstrated passion for lifelong learning and self motivation through continuing education.

Desired Experience:
  • Degree (B.S., M.S., PhD) in relevant scientific domain. E.G. Immunology, bioengineering, computer science, etc.

  • 2+ years in teaching role, either as assistant professor, teaching assistant, customer service or equivalent.

  • Intermediate coding experience in any relevant languages, including: HTML, JavaScript, R, C#, Objective-C++, Python, MATLAB, Mathcad.

  • Proven ability to code, especially in R, Java or JavaScript.


  • Lead a small team developing standalone plugins that allow FlowJo to match the pace of innovation and remain on the cutting edge of single-cell science.

  • Assist users with technical support inquiries via phone, email, and Flow forums.

  • Teach scientists to use FlowJo’s bioinformatics platforms.

  • Communicate customer needs to teams (engineers and support).

  • Collaborate with Engineering and QA for testing, specifying existing and future software components as informed by direct user feedback and Flow community developments.

  • Stay up to date with, and expand on expertise (flow cytometry and next gen-sequencing).

  • Produce and edit documentation, including revising existing and develop new application documentation in accordance with FlowJo's Technical Writing quality and standards.

  • Liaise with other departments.

  • Present on topics related to software products.
