Functions as a lead person for the production of lyophilized BD Vacutainer® products. Performs set up, adjusting, and operating manufacturing equipment, and assigning direct and indirect personnel to various jobs to achieve production schedules. Manufactures product to conform to all product and quality specifications while maintaining budgeted throughput rates.

Essential Functions:

Assigns employees to other jobs during instances of machine breakdown, changeovers or when "out of the ordinary" situations occur . Coordinates personnel movements with supervisor or other Setup personnel. Keeps abreast of all production departmental goals and objectives , including:

  • Production rates

  • Quality standards

  • Good Manufacturing Practices

  • Safety - necessity for guards,OSHAstandards, reporting ofon-the-jobinjuries (assuring supervisor has received accident reports from employee).

Coordinates with and assists Production Supervisor in maintaining waste and productivity within established standards. This will include, but not be limited to:

  • Reports trends during each shiftrelativeto quality, productivity, and waste to supervisor at mid shift and at the end of the shift.

  • Reportsproblems beingencounteredand corrective action taken, results of that activity and recommendations to correct problems asappropriate.

  • Some problems will require the Lyophilization Operator to contact supervision during the shift depending on the problemencountered.

  • Reports personnel-related problems requiring disciplinary action to supervision. Assuresoptimumproductivity and quality standards aremaintained.

  • Takesnecessarystepsrequiredto assure production personnel assigned to their production operation areadequately trained.

  • Works directly with the new operator explaining established procedures and follows up to see that the person is performing the job properly.

  • Assures thatneeded raw materials are requisitionedproperly and in time tomaintainproductivity goals.

  • Assures finished product is removed from manufacturing areas properly. Works directly with the employee and supervision toestablish, maintain and improve self-inspection procedures for the manufacturing of quality products.

  • Responsible for additive weight checks of filling equipment according to the latest acceptable methods on an hourly basis.

  • Followup to make certain checks are met. Instructs people on how to report production,wasteand material usage according to the latest acceptable methods.

  • Responsible for the reporting accuracy of the people under their direction. Changes over and sets up equipmentinthe areaofresponsibility tomaintainproductivity goals.Adjustsuntil such time that all machines areoperatingat ratedcapacityor when machines get out of adjustment. Informs andassistssupervision and technicians when a machine problem exists to remedy the problem and get that machine back to ratecapacity.

  • Initiatespurchaserequisitions and work orders for parts and supplies as needed,submittingthem to supervision for approval. Requisitions needed parts from parts crib to complete set ups or adjustments of equipment. Informs andassistssupervision and technicians of necessary repairs or maintenance needed on any production equipment.

  • Responsible for entering proper cycle and variables for each production run on the lyophilization units.

  • Responsible for proper placement of product thermocouples and lab sample tubes in each load per current BD Vacutainer® Operational Specifications. Ensures that proper samples and draw checks are made after each load is completed.

  • Responsible forminimizingcycle time by coordinating the loading and unloading of the units in a minimum amount of time.

  • Responsible for any record keeping or data accumulation necessary for cycle and lot traceability.

  • Responsiblefor assuringproper safety procedures are followed by all personnel assigned to their line(s) taking corrective action (advising/instructing) operators asappropriate.

  • Reports all safety hazards to supervision andmaintainsall equipment and working areas within established safety standards. Initiatespurchaserequisitions and/or work orders to besubmittedto supervision as related to safety improvements.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma.

Technical training is beyond secondary preferred, but not require d .

One to three years’ experience in technical area preferred, but not required .

Experience with the following equipment is required:

Operates and repairs all types of production equipment (mechanical and hydraulic).

Operates powered forklift, uses all forms of hand tools (electrical, manual, etc.).

Must be a licensed forklift operator.

PHYSICAL DEMAND ( Level 4 )

Heavy Work :

Exerting 50 to 100 pounds occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds constantly. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.

MENTAL DEMAND

Ability to read, write and understand English. Ability to understand the operation of production equipment and how to troubleshoot problems when encountered.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The associate is subject to inside environmental conditions : Protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.

The worker is subject to hazards : Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals and broken glass.

The associate is subject to oils : There is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.

SUPERVISION: Reports directly to Department Shift Supervisor. Although it has no direct supervision over others, the Lyophilization Operator will be responsible for assigning people to various job assignments.

Lyophilization Operator may act in the place of the Shift Supervisor in the Supervisor's absence and will report to the Production Manager during those instances.
