JOB SUMMARY

Functions as a licensed irradiation operator, which consists of operating the Sterilizer, maintaining the Sterilizer according to Company policy, state and governmental regulations. Operates with minimal machine downtime.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Practices safe and efficient operation of the Sterilizer and all internal and external conveyors, loading and unloading equipment.

  • Assists in the establishment and updates of procedures and practices associated with the Sterilizer.

  • Follows all appropriate Company policies while operating or performing maintenance on the irradiator.

  • Performs mechanical, electrical and pneumatic installations, modifications, refurbishments, and repairs and preventative maintenance to all department equipment.

  • Troubleshoots sterilizer and external conveyor to locate mechanical, electrical and pneumatic malfunctions to ensure minimum of machine downtime.

  • Communicates with Microbiology on issues pertaining to timer settings, carrier drawings, and cycle traceability.

  • Maintains compliance with established government and Company safety regulations and emergency procedures.

  • Performs and maintains all processing records, shippers, SAP transactions, Run Sheets, downtime records and dosimetry profiles.

  • Practices established material handling and storage procedures in pre-sterile, post sterile and Hold areas.

  • Maximizes the sterilization utilization by operating at the most efficient timer setting and scheduling product in the proper sequence.

  • Trains newly assigned Sterilization personnel on job functions and trains all Sterilization personnel on new and revised procedures.

  • Schedules and irradiates special testing in the research loop as required by Microbiology.

  • Unloads material from truck trailers, verifies count on packing list.

  • Inspects for visual damage and notes on shipper.

  • Verifies catalog number, batch number and quantity of each batch.

  • Loads run information into HMI screen in either automatic or manual mode.

  • Verifies all information on HMI matches run record.

  • Loads product by batch into sterilization carriers.

  • Follows instructions on run sheet and adheres to the correct carrier drawing for each product.

  • Verifies timer changes are entered into system correctly.

  • Unloads sterile product to maintain a constant flow of product through the sterilization process.

  • Places product in gravity racks and tracks on white board.

  • Clears jams in racks and makes sure pallets are adequately stacked before placing into the gravity racks.

  • Monitors palletizer, robots, stretch wrap, metal detector and labeler for proper operation.

  • Matches the run sheet pallet tracers and product count to assure correct items are accounted for.

  • Loads Product on trailers as specified on load sheets.

  • Moves trailers in and out when necessary.

  • Inspects trailers and properly completes trailer inspection form.

  • Performs any other department functions as necessary to insure maximum machine efficiencies are maintained.

  • Maintains a clean, neat, and orderly work area at all times.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Must be able to count accurately.

Experience

  • Experience of a mechanical or electrical nature helpful.

  • Must demonstrate leadership ability and be able to work with Supervision and co-workers.

  • Be qualified to relate the team concept to the other crew members.

  • Must be oriented in Plant Good Manufacturing Practices.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 80 pounds and push 100 pounds.

  • Medium-Heavy work: Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 35 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10-20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Mental Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and understand English.

  • Capable of analyzing information on a CRT or on computer printouts, all non-repetitive in nature.

Equipment Use

  • Ability to operate and repair all equipment in Department 336, including the use of a computer keyboard and any type forklift, slip sheet, and pallet mover.

  • Must be a licensed forklift operator.

Working Conditions

  • The worker is exposed to below 0 degrees to in excess of 100 degrees.

  • Ninety percent of the work day, this position is not exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

Supervision

  • Reports directly to the Sterilization Facilitator.

  • Has limited supervision over other Material Handlers and Material Handler operators.

Training

  • Must qualify for licensing by the State of Nebraska, Department of Health, Division of Radiological Health after the completion of the training program conducted by the plant Radiation Safety Officer.
