Job Description Summary

We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic R&D Senior Scientist I at BD Biosciences located in Cayey, Puerto Rico. The successful candidate will work in a cross-site, cross-disciplinary team and play a key role within the R&D organization with responsibility for conjugating and purifying monoclonal antibody-dye products for Clinical Flow Cytometry purposes. The candidate will work with minimal guidance on problems diverse in scope and scale, and with a continuous improvement mindset, to reduce development timelines and streamline technology transfers from R&D to Operations. Simultaneously, all work needs to conform to QSR, ISO and OSHA standards and regulations.

While this position is being recruited in Cayey, the direct supervisor will be located in San Diego, CA. Therefore, this role will be expected to function independently on a day-to-day basis with support from the local supervisor and team. Some travel to California should be expected for this position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participates in new product core teams as a reagent R&D core team member

  • Executes on the timely production of antibody-dye conjugates for the clinical reagents pipeline, strictly following ISO 13485 and GDP Practices

  • Develop, scale up and setup the manufacturing processes

  • Prepare technical reports, summaries, and quantitative analyses of assigned research projects.

  • Tabulate and analyze data for all phases of a research project utilizing statistical software packages.

  • Aid in the technology transfer of new dye technologies into clinical reagents

  • Act as a conduit for obtaining raw materials needed across sites to expedite the program overall

  • Helps to prepares and submit SOP’s and Work Instructions for new products

  • With support from functional manager, interfaces with Product Development, Research, Quality, Regulatory and Production to bring new technologies, methods, and tests into Manufacturing

  • Assists in the evaluation of technologies and processes for reliability, production capability, consistency, and cost effectiveness. Makes recommendations for process improvements

  • Trains Biochemists/Technicians in new processes and procedures

  • Keeps abreast of the basic requirements for compliance in area of work and complies with those requirements

  • Participates as required in training on regulatory issues affecting own area of work. Brings regulatory compliance questions/issues to the attention of management

  • Promotes a safe work environment by providing recommendations on maintaining the safety of the work environment

  • Maintains detailed records of activities

  • Actively participate in the Daily Management System by attending, leading shift start up meetings, and providing appropriate metrics

  • Maintain good housekeeping practices

  • Performs other related duties and assignments as required

  • Participates in knowledge Transfer activities as required

  • Participates in continuous learning of related science, technologies, and applications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Experience with performing and analyzing different chromatographic methods, including SEC, IEX, HIC, and others

  • Excellent working knowledge of UV-Vis spectroscopy and its use in the quantification of reagents

  • Experience in the operation of related instrumentation such as Micropipettes, volumetric devices, centrifuges, etc.

  • Knowledge in chemicals and kinetic reactions

  • FPLC (Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography), HPLC (High Pressure liquid Chromatography), UV monitors, chart recorders, electrophoresis and size exclusion columns knowledge

  • Experience working in a regulated production environment, such as FDA, ISO13485, or GMP preferred

  • Knowledge in antibody techniques, molecular biology techniques, instrumentation, and assays performed

  • Experience in statistical analysis, 6 Sigma Green Belt or Lean Manufacturing certification preferred

  • Experience in writing protocols & reports with justification for design and acceptance criteria for regulated products

  • Knowledge in chemicals and kinetic reactions

  • Knowledge in the formulation of reagents

  • General understanding of flow cytometry and immunoassays preferred

  • Knowledge and hands on experience in SAP preferred

  • Working knowledge and proficiency of MS Windows environment software such as MS Office

  • Effective skills using analytical thinking, problem solving, interpersonal relationships, written and oral communication, and planning/organization

  • Demonstrated ability to follow established policies and procedures

  • Fully Bilingual (English and Spanish)

  • Willing and able to travel to US mainland and offshore

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum requirements:

  • EITHER: Bachelors degree in a relevant scientific discipline (such as Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Microbiology or Engineering) and minimum of 5 years of Industrial experience in a pharmaceutical/medical device/biotechnology company

  • OR: Masters, PhD, or higher level degree in a relevant scientific discipline (such as Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Microbiology or Engineering) with relevant industrial experience preferred

MENTAL DEMAND

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Occasionally, the work requires carrying, lifting, pushing and pulling of heavy level objects. In addition, occasionally requires climbing and stooping. Frequently, the job requires standing, reaching, talking and seeing (far/depth perception/visual color discrimination). Constantly, the work requires walking, sitting, handling and hearing.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The work is performed constantly inside the building. The work requires exposure to extreme cold and heat temperatures changes. Also, requires the exposure to wet and/or humid conditions. The work environment has hazards exposures (mechanical-equipment, electrical, burns, explosives and biomedical) and atmospheric conditions (fumes, odors, mists and gases).
