Job Description Summary

This position leads the control specialists support service group serving the R&D Engineering, HYPO Syringe and Needle Assembly, Cannula, and Flush business units in the development, implementation, support and repair of electrical hardware and controls, PLC’s, vision systems, human interface panels, robotics, software validation, programming, data acquisition, etc. related to control systems. Ensures compliance to required safety standards. Coordinates the controls specialist group in all production support and project work activities. Controls and maintains department budget, overtime, and spending. Maintains priority scheduling, 24/7 plant wide coverage for controls debug, repair, and improvements. Works with engineering and process engineers on process improvement projects, and new product development projects, along with capacity additions, and equipment repairs and assembly.

Supports and leads cost reduction projects, productivity improvement projects, and equipment procurement and improvement projects. Oversees controls implementation and rationalization within plant. Collaborates with local BD engineers, material vendors, and outside vendors.

Ensures compliance with BD quality systems, policies, procedures, and best practices, and all local, state, federal and BD safety regulations, policies and procedures. Regular, punctual attendance is an essential job function. Ability to read and write and converse in English. Willing and able to uphold BD Values.

Major responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct activities of the control specialists group that provides support service to Business Units and implements replacement controls, software validations, control system debug and troubleshooting, provides learning, assures electrical safety and specifications related to electrical control systems.

  • Report to Engineering Manager and is accountable to the Engineering Manager and Business Unit Managers to ensure manufacturing equipment is supported electrically on a 24/7 basis.

  • Liaise with all Business Units in Columbus West Manufacturing Operations, local OT staff, corporate TGS staff, and works closely with plant engineers.

Essential Duties:

  • Lead and develop Control Specialists personnel.

  • Develop a controls specialist group with advanced capabilities to be able to complete complex control projects.

  • Provide development opportunities for Business Unit EMT/Global Technicians.

  • Provide excellent service to the production floor to achieve production goals.

  • Develop and implement a control's strategy that drives standardization for serviceability.

  • Develop and maintain controls specifications for equipment and processes.

  • Provide documentation associated with controls systems required for validation of equipment and processes.

  • Provide training on operation of controls systems, equipment, and processes to Business Unit associates.

  • Collaborate with and communicate with all manufacturing areas of the Columbus West Plant regarding controls, design and implementation as well as controls maintenance and troubleshooting.

  • Collaborate with plant engineers, management, vendors, and consultants.

  • Generate and submit new control system concepts and ideas to improve plant performance.

  • Plan, implement, and coordinate new process development activities.

  • Develop and implement processes for pilot production and scale-up programs.

  • Write capital expenditure requests for equipment and processes as needed.

  • Installs new equipment and processes to support plant initiatives.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience in design and implementation of electrical safety systems for industrial manufacturing equipment.

  • Ability to generate, read, and interpret electrical and controls drawings for industrial manufacturing equipment.

  • Excellent computer skills.

  • Experience with SAP work order system.

  • Experience in budget maintenance.

  • Record of accomplishment of strong people and team development.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to establish and maintain strong, effective team relationships with multiple organizational levels across manufacturing sites and business units.

  • Strong written and verbal communication, including documentation standards, adept at articulating priorities, and speak to stakeholders at all levels in the organization.

  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines and see projects through completion.

  • Ability to travel up to 25% as projects require.

Supervision

  • Direct - This position will have direct supervision of plant controls engineers, designers, and specialists and project technicians.

  • Indirect - This position will have indirect supervision of Business Unit EMT/Global Technicians to follow established controls procedures and develop their technical skills.

Accountability

  • All work is subject to review by the Plant Operations team and the Engineering Manager on a regular basis or at the conclusion of assigned projects.

  • Safety/Environment – Implemented projects and processes must adhere to OSHA safety and environmental requirements.

  • Technical Achievement – Successfully implement new and improved technology resulting in improved planned performance standards.

  • Schedule Achievement – Successfully implement planned projects to an agreed upon due date, and within acceptable resource variance levels.

  • Capital/Budget Control – Responsible for initiation of capital expenditures. Expenditures to be within the approved budget.

  • Stakeholder management – Plant leadership such as plant manager, engineering manager, operations manager, quality manager, and finance manager etc.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Min Education: Associate degree in related field or equivalent ( Electrical Mechanical Technology or Mechatronics). Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Mechanical Engineering preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Industrial Electrical Controls Engineering and support including control systems, PLC programming, vision inspection systems, motion controls, robotics, operator interface panels, power distribution, electrical control components, data acquisition, and software validation.

  • Experience working with third party vendors and system integrators, specifying hardware and software for controls and automation projects, FAT, SAT, and project management.

  • Experience with industrial controls systems hardware and software specifications.

  • Knowledge of Industry 4.0 / Smart Factory digitalization transformation platforms, connectivity requirements, cybersecurity controls and its applicability in the healthcare industry, manufacturing, medical devices, IoT and intersection of IT and OT
