Job Description Summary

The Controls Engineer shall provide diversified support of projects, tests, diagnoses, experiments, and any other higher-level electrical and/or programming support function. This position requires that qualified Controls Engineer be responsible for electrical design concepts, programming, cost analysis, troubleshooting, debugging, and testing of new and existing production equipment. The Controls Engineer will initiate and complete projects that replace obsolete equipment, reduce operation cost, increase efficiency and capability, improve quality, and any other ideas that lead to continuous improvements of automated manufacturing equipment. This position will include electrical design, software validation, programming for PLC’s, vision systems, microprocessors, motion control, digital displays, robotic system, material handling systems, Equipment Safety Circuits, and all other electrical control systems. The Controls Engineer shall support other plant-wide departments as needed for manufacturing process improvement and quality upgrade activities including MES downtime and other interfaces that require site or corporate IT support. The Controls Engineer shall assist Controls Specialists and EMT’s when needed in troubleshooting difficult problems. This individual shall provide to the Controls Specialists, EMT’s, and Mold Techs the training/mentoring needed to repair control systems plant-wide. The Controls Engineer will provide leadership by setting an example for Controls Specialists, EMT’s, and Mold Techs. They will have the mentoring skills to be able to coach others and will delegate work to other associates as needed. Ensures compliance with BD quality systems, policies, procedures and best practices, and all local, state, federal and BD safety regulations, policies and procedures. The Controls Engineer shall provide diversified support of projects, tests, diagnoses, experiments, and any other higher-level electrical and/or programming support function, such as: electrical design concepts, programming, cost analysis, troubleshooting, debugging, and testing of new and existing production equipment. Initiating and complete projects that replace obsolete equipment, reduce operation cost, increase efficiency and capability, improve quality, any other ideas that lead to continuous improvements of automated manufacturing equipment. Software validation, programming for PLC’s, vision systems, microprocessors, motion control, digital displays, robotic system, material handling systems, Equipment Safety Circuits, and all other electrical control systems. They support other plant-wide departments as needed for manufacturing process improvement and quality upgrade activities including MES downtime and other interfaces that require site or corporate IT support. They have mentoring skills incorporated to build continuous leadership and be able to teach others, delegate work to associates as needed.

The responsibilities include:

  • Support the Controls Vision Engineer & Process Engineers in implementation of process improvements in the area of mechanical & electrical systems, programming, and Vision Systems.

  • Electrical and mechanical troubleshooting and repair of machinery, pneumatics, electric motors, variable speed drives and servo systems.

  • Performs Preventative & predictive maintenance as assigned.

  • Maintenance repair of Programmable Logic Controllers, Robotics, Industrial networks, with vision systems.

  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance and calibration of equipment within established standards and requirements.

  • Responsible for spare part's inventory for machines and equipment.

  • Will teach machine operators on proper methods of operation, preventative maintenance, and safety to assure quality and quantity of parts.

  • Duties may require correction of problems during off-shifts on a call-up basis.

  • Update Quality System documents as necessary. Interface with IT and OT groups.

  • Other duties as required supporting the needs of the business.

  • Ensures compliance with BD quality systems, policies, procedures, best practices and local, state, federal safety laws, policies and procedures.

Minimum Education:

This position has the following educational requirements:

  • Associates Degree in Electrical/Engineering/Electronic/Electromechanical/Manufacturing Technology (Required).

  • BA/BS Degree in Electrical/Engineering/Electronic/Electromechanical/Manufacturing Technology (Preferred).

Minimum Experience:

  • 5 years related experience with related Associates degree.

  • 2 years required with Bachelors degree.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities (KSA’s)

Candidate should be proficient in the following KSA:

  • Writing of complex PLC programs in various operator interfaces.

  • Implement motion control and vision equipment.

  • Draw electrical and controls schematics.

  • Design and implement Vision Inspection Systems.

  • Troubleshooting skills in various test instruments.

  • PC Skills to interface with various controls systems.

  • Perform a complete design, program, and implementation of a project.

  • Mentoring ability.

  • Communication.

  • Machine Vision Systems.

  • Ability to be responsible for multiple projects.

  • Industrial Machine Communication skills.

  • Machine data collection systems/Manufacturing execution system.

  • Ability to hold teaching sessions for Controls group to promote growth.

  • Ability to adhere to BD Safety Standard on all new equipment and drive implementation on existing equipment. Also perform risk assessments.

  • Assure that the Plant General Machine Specification is adhered to at all levels.
