CAE/Advanced Prototyping Machinist III

The CAE/Advanced Prototyping Machinist III is an essential part of BD’s Corporate Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) Advanced Prototyping (AP) team and will have the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of BD’s next-generation medical products and enhance the current product portfolio. Under the general direction of the Corporate CAE Advanced Prototyping Staff Engineer and Manager, This position is responsible for fabricating precision machined parts through the use of all machine shop equipment following standard machine shop practices and participating in daily shop schedules and functions.

The direct impact of these efforts will be to deliver high-quality medical parts to the BDX community through various machining methods such as milling, lathe work, grinding, and EDM in both a manual and CNC-driven application.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains machine shop tools, tooling, equipment, components, fixtures, and materials as required

  • Writes programs for CNC equipment based on solid models as well as traditional drawings

  • Works closely with R&D teams to develop methods for manufacturability of designs

  • Participates with, and receives instructions from, engineers in determining the design configuration and specifications for new mechanisms, fixtures, or medical devices

  • Fabricates, assembles, modifies, and adjusts complex new or redesigned mechanisms, including prototype injection molds and developmental products

  • Performs preventative maintenance on machinery and equipment, creating and maintaining repair logs when required, including standard operating procedures while maintaining best practices for their assigned area.

  • Develops new and replacement parts for machinery and tooling

  • Assists in the development and devising methods to manufacture, assemble, or process products.

  • Examines used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirement using measuring equipment. Inspects and measures components to detect wear, misalignment, or other problems.

  • Maintaining shop material inventory levels.

  • Assists in the selection and development of the strategy for the shop, including the purchase of equipment, shop layout, and material flow.

Educational and Experience Requirement :

  • Associate Degree from a technical institute OR journeyman apprenticeship program completion (with HS diploma or GED) OR 5 to 7 years related experience (with HS diploma or GED).

  • Adherence to all BD policies and procedures as well as any laws where applicable.

  • Effective written and verbal communication with management, project teams, and multifunctional personnel on a timely basis.

  • Work independently to identify actions needed to complete assignments in accordance with project prioritization.

  • Positive attitude with a desire to interact with peers and internal customers

  • Ability to work with internal customers to evaluate design manufacturability.

  • Computer Skills:

  • Proficient with Windows environment including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook

  • Proficient with CAD/CAM software (MasterCam experience a plus, some CAM software a necessity)

  • Knowledgeable with CAD software (SolidWorks experience a plus, some CAD software a necessity)

  • Machining/Tooling Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of modern machine tool technology and manufacturing processes.

  • Able to program, setup, and operate 3 axis mill, 2 axis lathe, mill turn 5 axis

  • 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC mills and lathes

  • Able to program, setup, and operate EDM

  • Able to program, setup, and operate surface grinding

  • Mazak/Mazatrol & Integrex experience a plus

  • Injection tool & die background a plus

  • Ability to interpret GD&T per ANSI Y14.5

  • Ability to verify Apart geometry/tolerances using essential machine shop inspection tools

Other Work Requirements:

  • Successful machinist must be manually dexterous and physically able to operate the machinery and computers required to complete their tasks

  • Physical demands: the employee is regularly required to stand or sit for extended periods of time and must be able to lift heavy weights (up to 50 lbs)
