Job Description Summary

The BD Urology and Critical Care (UCC) business unit is seeking a Senior Engineer for the Research and Development group. The position is responsible for the design and development of innovative products within the Home Care Platform, which is high-growth platform in UCC.

This role will partner with cross functional New Product Development (NPD) teams to design and develop next generation devices. They will interface with internal and external experts, key opinion leaders, and customers to gather feedback to develop, iterate, and refine the design. This will allow us to expand the Home Care portfolio and deliver new solutions to customer and patients worldwide.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with Class 1 or 2 electro-mechanical medical devices.

The BD Urology and Critical Care (UCC) business unit is seeking a Senior Engineer for the Research and Development group. The position is responsible for the design and development of innovative products within the Home Care Platform, which is high-growth platform in UCC.

This role will partner with multi-functional New Product Development (NPD) teams to design and develop next generation devices. They will work with internal and external experts, key opinion leaders, and customers to gather feedback to develop, iterate, and refine the design. This will allow us to expand the Home Care portfolio and deliver new solutions to customer and patients worldwide.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with Class 1 or 2 electro-mechanical medical devices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop laboratory tests, protocols, and reports to ensure conformance of prototype devices to performance specifications, FDA, and applicable international regulatory and biocompatibility requirements.

  • Closely follow established design control procedures and documentation practices.

  • Communicate project status, through verbal and written reports and schedules, to management.

  • Provides Technical support and/or leadership for New Product Development projects and Early-stage ideation projects.

  • Directly responsible for working with the technical team to implement new product development projects through the phase gate process: idea, planning, development, commercialization (e.g., detailed design, verification and validation testing, usability studies).

  • Conduct design reviews and perform failure mode and effects analysis.

  • Review new product concepts: down-select, refine until design freeze.

  • Develop performance and product specifications

  • Provide inputs to the project schedule and risk register for the R&D work.

  • Work with internal and external engineering groups for the fabrication of devices to support bench testing and human subject evaluations

  • Transfer new products to Manufacturing

  • Work with vendors, consultants, and customers. Provide guidance on the development of supply agreements as required.

  • Provide technical direction to manufacturing during pilot production, as well as on currently manufactured products.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor degree required with technical focus in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering. MS desired.

  • Min 3 years confirmed experience as a medical device design / development engineer.

  • Confirmed experience in technology or innovative product development preferably in the medical device industry

  • Experience across the entire device lifecycle, from inception, through design, construction, testing, and commercial launch preferred

  • Creativity in new product concepts, designs and manufacturing processes.

  • Experience in Urology, Surgical, Wound Care preferred.

  • Proven track record connecting with different levels of the organization.

  • Requires validated understanding of:

  • Industry regulations as it pertains to medical devices

  • External Standards, Design controls, Quality controls, Manufacturing methods

  • Requires track record of:

  • Protocol/report testing and writing

  • Development and commercialization of medical devices

  • Generating and documenting intellectual property

  • In depth or creative approach to problem solving

  • Contributes to development of new concepts

  • Technical guidance on design theories and applications

  • Capable of prioritizing tasks and provide a timely schedule of completion.

  • Capable of detailed component and sub-assembly level analysis (not limited to tolerance or finite element analysis)

  • Capable of performing sophisticated analysis independently

  • Showed strengths of communicating best practices

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Solid understanding of Microsoft Office Suite programs and various statistical software packages (Minitab)

  • Engineering s/w: MatLab, AutoCad, SolidWorks

  • Ability to conceptualize ideas, empower and focus individuals and teams and drive projects through to completion on time and on budget.

  • Design and execution of user studies

  • Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (multi-cavity injection molding and high-speed assembly) methodologies

  • Basic understanding of IP considerations

  • Clear understanding of manufacturing process validation including FAI/FAT, development and IQ/OQ/PQ

  • Experience using sophisticated engineering tools such as Design for Six Sigma or Six Sigma methodologies, Black Belt is a plus.
