A great opportunity has arisen for a Ph.D. position within the European Industrial Doctorate project SIMPPERMedDev with research topics related to the Manufacturing of Medical Devices. The SIMPPERMedDev project involves a consortium of 5 leading European research universities from Ireland, Denmark, Italy, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, along with 10 industry partners who manufacture important classes of medical devices and products, and one of Europe’s premier orthopedics hospitals. The consortium intends to train 12 Ph.D. researchers in advanced manufacturing and surface integrity associated with the micro/nano processing of polymers for such medical devices.
The successful candidate will be primarily located at BDs research center of excellence in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland with University College Dublin acting as the Ph.D. awarding body. As part of the collaborative SIMPPER agreement, the successful candidate will have up to six-month secondments with other members of the SIMPPER consortium, thereby ensuring that the candidate will spend time in both academia and industry, and in at least two different countries.
The project “Design and development of microstructures for low friction polymer surfaces in medical device applications” aims to develop and characterize next-generation micro-nano structured polymer surfaces to optimize friction forces of injection molded components. The candidate will have the opportunity to upskill in the field of injection molding and become a specialist in the design of large-scale manufacturable micro-nano textured polymer surfaces and their characterization. The successful candidate will have access to technical support and facilities from the larger BD community, supplemented by academic support and access to facilities of academic host University College Dublin.
Specific Eligibility Criteria on the H2020 Marie Sklodowska Curie program:
At the time of recruitment, the applicants should be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.
Mobility rule: At the time of recruitment, applicants should not have resided or carried out main activity (studies, work, etc.) in the country of the host for more than 12 months in the 3 years before the recruitment date.
Language skills: Applicants must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high.
An honors BSc or MSc in the field of mechanical, manufacturing, or Chemical Engineering, or a related field that facilitates their enrolment in a Ph.D. program at UCD.
Knowledge of characterization of mechanical properties and surface properties.
Experience in CAD software (e.g. Solidworks or similar).
Fluency in written and spoken English.
Hands-on experience with micro-nano fabrication techniques and surface characterization.
Practical experience with injection molding.
Experience in FEA modeling of mechanical properties, Multiphysics, and injection molding (e.g. Solidworks, COMSOL, ANSYS, ABAQUS, Python, or similar).
Knowledge of polymer materials & processing, and their characterization.
