As such, a critical need has emerged to redouble our efforts and continuously create value within the R&D function and our product portfolio by focusing on lean principles. We will liberate resources for investment by reducing costs of current products; streamlining policies, processes, and procedures; creating or modernizing tools; and appropriately planning and managing our global R&D footprint.

Reporting solid line to Director, MDS R&D Lean Engineering, the Associate Director, R&D Digital Tools Architecture will work across legacy BD and Bard to lead a team that will be accountable for creating, digitizing, and/or modernizing end-to-end product development tools, including all critical information, data flows and data and information management. The incumbent will work closely with cross-functional partners to implement the tools and culture necessary to align with the overall strategy with respect to Design Control, Lean Engineering, and product testing.

BD is seeking an individual who has the ability to articulate a compelling tools architecture to support product lifecycle management facilitating the development of streamlined and compliant products. This leader needs to be hands-on in ensuring executional success, including serving as a core architect accountable for the revamped and revitalized product development systems and tools.


  • Develop, build, and implement a modern, digital, end-to-end Product Development environment that provides a streamlined user experience for R&D teams around the globe

  • Architect global data flows and information management and develop and direct their governance.

  • Lead the practical incorporation of tools and technology within the product development processes while giving consideration to organizational and cultural change management.

  • Using sound system engineering principles, lead establishment of system configuration requirements for products development based on a strong understanding of internal cross-functional needs.

  • Act as a leadership partner in developing the BDX enterprise strategy.

  • Ensure effective translation of system designs to validation testing.

  • Develop and apply innovative approaches to ensure the effective capture, retention and communication of technical knowledge generated (tacit & implicit).

  • Support evaluation and assessment of new technologies, processes and industry trends that can or have the potential to impact our business strategies.

  • Establish and maintain strong collaborative partnership with other BD R&D organizations and external partners, as appropriate, in order to leverage best-in-class technologies, solutions, methods and capabilities.

  • Develop realistic and actionable system design and implementation plans; demonstrate strong accountability for successful completion of programs with successful user uptake.

  • Proactively develop, maintain and share technical knowledge in specialized area(s), remaining up-to-date on current trends and best practices. Actively lead, mentor and motivate team members and less-experienced associates, while also ensuring effective cross-functional communication and engagement.

  • Ensure compliance with BD quality policies, procedures and practices as well as with all local, state, federal and BD safety regulations, policies and procedures

  • Effectively communicate program status to senior management.PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONSThe successful candidate will have a proven record of product or tool development and leadership in the medical device industry with a minimum of fifteen years of experience. S/he should be well-versed and experienced with all aspects of product development including design, development, verification and validation and other issues relevant to the final commercialized product. In particular, s/he should have demonstrated experience designing, developing, and implementing digital tools ( e.g. , Requirements Management, PLM, and LIMs).The candidate will have the ability to build strong partnerships and rapport with peers, subordinates, and superiors, in particular within the IT, Quality and Regulatory functions. The candidate will have earned an undergraduate degree, preferably in engineering. An advanced degree will be advantageous.Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes:

  • Deep knowledge, experience and understanding of best practices for developing medical devices with the use of a PLM tool. implementation

  • Expert knowledge of R&D architectural landscape

  • Demonstrated program management capabilities with a strong track record of end to end, cross-functional program delivery and specific experience in R&D digital tool and PLM software enterprise level

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills required. Experience leading global teams is a strong plus

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines

  • Action oriented with a focus on results

  • Demonstrated positive work ethic with a strong commitment to achieving project goals


An Undergraduate degree in an engineering field is required; an MS or Doctoral degree is highly preferred and an MBA desirable.

  • BS degree in Engineering discipline, MS/MBA preferred

  • 15+ years of product or tool development experience

  • Successful Project/Product Management expertise
