Job Description SummaryTHE POSITION

These recommendations are often in the form of an executive briefing, Business Case, Integrated Business Plan.

THE POSITION

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Associate Director of Strategic Innovation will have a wide variety of responsibilities and duties related to the delivery of new opportunities as well as driving an Innovation Culture within the IDS business:

  • The Associate Director of Strategic Innovation is accountable for the development and implementation, BD Life Sciences – IDS pipeline of New Ideas (NI) in our key hunting grounds. These are high value/high growth opportunities in the field of Integrated Diagnostics.

  • The Associate Director of Strategic Innovation also creates and inspires a shared vision to commercialize or explore disruptive innovation, across IDS and socializes that appropriately within BD

  • He/she builds the necessary reporting tools to enable executive communication at the BU, segment, and Corporation LT

  • Identifies, develops, and pursues opportunities to improve strategy, process, execution, and organization of the innovation process

  • Leads and seeks collaboration efforts with other BD Innovation functions, Medical Affairs and/or Strategic Marketing groups and outside institutions and firms

  • Actively supports and participates in the IDS PMT or if assigned to any other such body within BD

  • Leads technology scouting activities to serve the objectives of the IDS innovation strategies

  • Identifies potential licensing/partnership/acquisition targets

  • Actively manages the licensing/partnership process, working with business, legal and finance teams to develop investment theses/business cases and execute the contracts

  • Selects, develops, organizes, motivates, and coordinates staff to effectively fulfill their functions. Manages the Talent Pipeline, building the necessary skills to execute the Innovation plan and provide for effective leadership succession

  • Ensures compliance with local BD quality and regulatory policies, procedures, and practices through appropriate communication, training, and education of sound quality assurance and regulatory principles.

  • Ensures compliance with all local, state, federal, and BD safety regulations, policies, and procedures

Managing the IDS Innovation System

  • He/she leads and owns the Innovation system from new space identification, to ideation, to early development by brainstorming on high level medical/clinical unmet needs, creative tools / Workshops, qualitative and quantitative testing

  • Establishes appropriate and robust market research techniques enabling a reliable and timely evaluation of new ideas

  • Leads the building of a network of innovation sponsors and Innovators across IDS

  • Drives the building of strategic profiles and business cases for market assessment of new business opportunities

  • Performs periodic reviews of progress against plans. Ensures plans are executed appropriately within all functions and external sources.

  • Develops detailed budgets in accordance with project and organization plans as well as business objectives. Manages budget diligently and be accountable to perform to the budget

  • Defines actionable metrics to measure progress against business objectives and monitors periodically and frequently to identify gaps quickly, and mitigate early

  • Ensures appropriate processes are followed for effective and timely engagement of other parts of the organization

  • Accountable for communication and establishing a unique Innovation Culture within IDS

  • The Associate Director of Strategic Innovation defines and implements resourcing strategy that best leverages both internal and external competencies. He/she focuses internal competencies on those capabilities or know-how that are competitive differentiators

  • Actively develops and mentors associates

  • Develops an actively learning organization willing to take risks, systematically learning and applying new lessons

  • The Associate Director of Strategic Innovation demonstrates strong and clear accountability for the group’s performance and delivery

  • Ensures full integration with other worldwide functions, BD Technologies & Corporate Business Development

  • Ensures awareness of roadmap, projects, products, technologies, and capabilities. Identifies and leverage synergies, expertise, experiences, and resources where appropriate

REQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCES AND LEADERSHIP TRAITS

  • A strong technical or medical educational background (MS, PhD. or MD) is required. An MBA is highly preferred

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in the field of business development or start-up creation or healthcare consulting, with 5 years project management and 3 years personnel management preferably in the medical device and/or Pharmaceutical industry with successful track record of delivering products

  • Advanced leadership skills, inclusive of strong interpersonal, communications and influence skills is required

  • Proven record of successfully applying technical and managerial judgment

  • Advanced problem solving skills and a strong team orientation is required

  • Project planning, project and Portfolio Management

  • Broad and deep understanding of disciplined product development processes, regulatory, and quality requirements

  • Strong motivational fit as well as strong fit with BD values and leadership standard
