Job Description SummaryThe Director of Innovation will be responsible for building and leading the front-end innovation engine for the organization and accelerate business growth through identification of new products, technologies, solutions, and business development opportunities aligned with business strategy and growth targets. S/he will serve as a critical member and facilitator of the BG Innovation Council (IC) and a member of BG R&D LT. While this role reports into the R&D function, the nature and role of this high visibility and high impact position requires cross-functional leadership across a variety of functions to deliver seamless and world-class innovation for the BG business group. The incumbent is expected to extensively leverage external ecosystem including industry and value chain partners, incubators, accelerators, academic / government labs, while building upon internal capabilities across the BD network, in identifying in-licensing and acquisition opportunities, initial screening and supporting the evaluation process through diligence. # Job Description ### BD is currently seeking a Director of Innovation for a $1.7B global business group (BG) within BD Medical, dedicated to delivering quality and innovative solutions in mediation delivery. The BG manages a healthy and growing portfolio of drug, device, combination products addressing hospital acquired infections (HAIs), medication error, vascular complications, patient and healthcare worker safety. The incumbent is expected to extensively leverage external ecosystem including industry and value chain partners, incubators, accelerators, academic / government labs, while building upon internal capabilities across the BD network, in identifying in-licensing and acquisition opportunities, initial screening and supporting the evaluation process through diligence. ### ### S/he will build a high-performing globally distributed team capable of synthesizing the macro trends, clinical, technological developments with internal business needs and constraints into product/technology roadmaps with compelling value propositions, and systematically de-risking them with an agile, learn-fast mindset. ### ### The position is based in Franklin Lakes, NJ Primary Responsibilities ### Innovation Management + Develop a comprehensive understanding of the marketplace, macro-trends, competitive landscape and collaborate with marketing to identify gaps and opportunities. + Facilitate prioritization and cross-functional business alignment on strategic initiatives, participate in strategic planning and management of product roadmap. + While working with cross-functional partners, uncover global insights and develop innovation roadmap / architecture / pipeline that includes product and category leadership products / platforms. + Coordinate cross-functional due diligence efforts on external technologies and apply understanding of technical, legal, financial and market dynamics which have bearing on final agreements. + Lead new concept and opportunity exploration, evaluation, proof of concept development and development of business cases, working with cross-functional partners. ### Technology Sensing & External Outreach + Develop and execute an outreach strategy to identify high-impact external innovations aligned with business strategy. + Lead scouting and evaluation of relevant next-generation technologies and solutions, competitive benchmarking toward assessments of licensing, acquisition, partnership opportunities, support development of business cases and charter appropriate programs. + Monitor the external business environment to maintain a knowledge base of licensing transactions and other company activities in the target areas. + Build and maintain an active network in the industry, technical, and with academic scientists and key opinion leaders, set up KOL boards in critical areas, as well as with medtech, biotech and venture communities by attending partnering conferences, industry events and congresses. + Identify and apply for funding from a variety of sources, including government and foundation grants. ### Concept Development + Develop and maintain multigenerational product and technology roadmap + Conduct assessment of select inbound opportunities; lead/support technical, clinical, commercial due diligence with cross functional teams. + Lead ideation, new concept and opportunity exploration, evaluation, proof of concept development and development of business cases, working with cross-functional partners. + Attract, retain, and develop strong team with interdisciplinary competencies and growth mindset. + Ensure continuous monitoring of the landscape in the core portfolio. + Prepare assessments and recommendations to be presented to executive leadership. Requirements + Technical degree with a strong business acumen and a demonstrated track record of driving innovation in a technology focused portfolio. A PhD/MBA is preferred. + A critical and strategic thinker with deep technical curiosity and commitment to innovation. + Demonstrated track record of formulating and advancing innovation agenda and driving impactful and high commercial value opportunities through the pipeline. + Demonstrated experience identifying and evaluating external opportunities for business development, licensing, partnerships and incorporating them within the portfolio. + Ability to establish internal and external business relationships across functional, organizational, cultural boundaries, highly engaging and comfortable interacting with executive teams. + Entrepreneurial attitude and results focus with the ability to balance operational and strategical business elements. + Negotiation and influencing skills with diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders, partners to creatively solve problems. + Leadership courage to constructively challenge peers and senior leadership. + Ability to drive well-informed, fact-based decision making. + Strong network within small businesses, universities, and the venture capital community preferred. # Primary Work LocationUSA NJ - Franklin Lakes # Additional Locations # Work Shift Becton, Dickinson and Company is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
