POSITION SUMMARY / KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

This role is an exciting opportunity for a leader who has passion for driving transformative innovation. This position is part of Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS), BD’s largest Business Unit with $3.8B in annual revenue. MDS is comprised of the world leading products needed to safely prepare and administer medication, such as: intravenous catheters, IV sets, connectors, flush syringes, Chloraprep infection prevention products, hazardous drug safety containment items, and hypodermic syringes. MDS is focused on reducing complications, improving patient safety/outcomes, and lowering total cost of care around the world.

This position will be responsible for developing the smart connected care strategy for MDS. MDS has initiated a portfolio of intelligent devices with a desire to expand upon these offerings connecting across other smart technology within BD and beyond to continue to improve patient care. Initial focus areas include both vascular access management and medication safety where significant opportunity exists to improve patient outcomes. All the initiatives in the smart connect care platform are first to the world technologies with visibility and support from the company CEO.

The role will be located at BD’s global headquarters in Franklin Lakes, NJ or near BD’s site in San Diego, CA. Remote work will be considered as well.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development of the pipeline strategy for MDS smart connected care that builds the next generation of current intelligent devices and expands into new areas of significant unmet need.

  • Identifying significant areas of unmet need through fact-based market and customer insight that surface new growth opportunities for MDS.

  • Understanding the current smart device development within the MDS team and across BD that could create synergies with the offerings from MDS.

  • Engaging outside experts for new technologies and development of relationships with key opinion leaders and academic institutions to be on the pulse of emerging technology trends and opportunities to co-develop new innovation.

  • Collaboration with medical affairs, R&D, and Business development to identify and prioritize focus area for innovation and development of both organic and inorganic technologies to augment the smart connected care pipeline.

  • Collaboration with other business groups across MDS and within BD to coordinate strategic roadmaps and data strategies that could continue to drive better outcomes for patients and a competitive advantage for BD.

  • Definition of next generation evolutions for both the Intelliport intelligent IV bolus medication delivery and VAMguard smart catheter care programs.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of developing strategic innovation roadmaps in transformational innovation spaces including both organic and inorganic components within the healthcare industry. Strong strategic, analytical, collaboration, and influence skills are a must. The candidate will have a reputation of effective collaboration and influence across a matrix environment with the ability to make the complex simple and drive focus and impact within a large organization. The candidate will foster a culture of customer and market intimacy as well as a spirit of experimentation and iteration to surface impactful innovation opportunities. The ideal candidate has experience developing innovation with device plus software combinations in the healthcare industry.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Attributes:

  • Demonstrated strategic capabilities evolving ambiguity to tangible growth opportunities.

  • Advanced fact-based, critical thinking skills use to develop strategies.

  • Ability to collaboration across functions (R&D, Medical Affairs, business development, regions) as well as business groups within MDS and across BD to elevate synergies and areas of expertise.

  • Strong clinical and technical acumen to assess fit of new technology with prioritized areas of unmet customer needs.

  • Experience with innovation and progressing both organic and inorganic initiations from concept to launch.

  • Experience shaping new business models involving device and software combinations. Ability to map digital technology trends like predictive analytics, artificial intelligence, and data aggregation into meaningful clinical decision support.

  • Consistently pushes self and others to achieve challenging goals with a track record of executional successes

  • Highly effective interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence with the talent to foster strong relationships with colleagues and customer stakeholders and well as humbleness to seek out diverse points of view.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment. Possesses good organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks through effective prioritization to meet tight deadlines

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree and MBA required; technical/engineering background a plus.

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in marketing, strategy, or business development ideally within the med tech or healthcare industry.

  • Strategy and innovation experience within an established global healthcare company and/or management consulting is desirable.

  • Experience in innovation involving software and device combinations is desirable; interoperability.
