Medication Delivery Solution (MDS) is seeking a Director of Strategic Innovation to focus on both organic and inorganic innovation within the MDS Center of Excellence (COE).

The MDS COE consist of 6 functional groups, namely Material Science, Product Stewardship, Packaging, Labeling & Graphics, Analytical Chemistry, Rapid Design & Development, and Human Factors & User Experience Design. This role will work across these various functions to harness their strong functional capabilities to define organic innovation opportunities within COE and across MDS. Scout & establish relationship with external targets e.g., companies, universities, foundations etc., to identify inorganic targets for funding, partnership, or acquisition. S/he will manage inflight innovation projects and people management of direct reports. This role reports to the Senior Director of MDS COE and will serve as a core member and facilitator of the COE Innovation Council (IC) and a member of COE R&D Leadership Team. Director of Innovation, MDS R&D Center of Excellence

BD is currently seeking a Director of Innovation for the MDS (business unit) R&D Center of Excellence (COE) within BD Medical Segment. This leader is empowered to deliver market shaping innovative technologies, products, and solutions across the MDS business unit to enable transformation of medical practice and serve as a COE innovation evangelist across BD.

The Director of Innovation is responsible for building and leading the front-end innovation engine for COE to accelerate global business growth by identifying and leveraging organic and inorganic resources. Reporting to the Senior Director of MDS COE, this leader will serve as a core member and facilitator of the COE Innovation Council (IC) and a member of COE R&D LT.

The role is high visibility, high impact, and strategic with significant cross-functional leadership responsibilities to deliver seamless and transformational innovation across MDS business unit. The incumbent is expected to extensively leverage their global networks including industry and value chain partners, incubators, accelerators, and academic/government labs, to build internal organizational competencies across the BD network. Included in this is licensing and acquisition opportunities, initial technology and solution assessments, rapid prototypes and pilots, and due diligence processes.

Primary Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Serve as the SME and lead technologist to direct front-end scouting activities based on healthcare mega-trends, MDS strategic areas, COE Focus Areas (including cost and sustainability), and customer pain points & insights.

  • Drive predictable execution of COE Idea Phase projects while balancing front-end scouting activities.

  • Populate and balance the funnel with short-, mid-, and long-term organic and inorganic opportunities.

  • Define/refine COE Focus Areas as appropriate.

  • Effective people management to drive a culture of rapid innovation, execution, team development, and empowerment.

  • Strengthen BD’s IP portfolio by filing IDRs and patents while keeping an eye towards IDR/patent to commercialized customer solution ratio.

Execution

  • Build a regular cadence, define agenda, and successfully partner with Business Groups to identify new opportunities and common focus areas. As an output to these meetings identify where COE functional expertise can be deployed with aligned goals & deliverables.

  • Present clear and concise status of funded Innovation projects at Engineering Execution Control Meetings.

  • Work with COE leader and PMO to propose annual spend and once approved manage spend with full accountability to high predictability.

  • Architect, collate, and drive to completion COE presentation at MDS Innovation Council.

  • Promote COE innovation mandate and brand by participating in scientific/technical associations and conferences through leadership and podium roles.

Partnership

  • Identify targets (companies, universities, foundations, DoD, etc.) for funding (internal & external), capability & capacity enablement, partnership (CDA, SOW, licensing) or acquisition and work with respective stakeholder(s) to execute.

  • Establish forums like patient and clinician KOL board, sales input & advisory council etc. for ideation, engagement, vetting, and feedback per the needs of COE and broader, if appropriate.

  • Partner and/or organize igniter/ideation sessions to harness the power of many within and outside COE

  • Partner with COE R&D LT members to identify and develop team innovation competencies.

  • Partner with BG & COE R&D leaders and PMO to align schedules and outputs ensuring efficient and effective development program starts. If development is not ready to start, package the concept work and place on the ‘innovation shelf.’

  • Be abreast of trends in healthcare, knowledge of competitive landscape, and organize/participate in immersive experience to generate actionable insights

  • Along with the COE leader champion & socialize COE innovation activities within MDS and broader BDx.

Requirements

  • Technical degree with a strong business acumen and a demonstrated track record of driving innovation. A related graduate degree is strongly preferred.

  • 15 years professional experience in technical or technical-medical fields.

  • 10 years medical device experience.

  • Demonstrated commercial innovation success.

  • Demonstrated experience identifying and establishing partnerships.

  • Demonstrated ability to be effective in highly diverse cultures and matrix organizations.

  • Demonstrated global program management skills.
