Reporting to the VP Manufacturing Technology and Innovation, this position provides overall leadership and guidance to drive scale and efficiency and better customer outcomes across BDX globally. The objective of this role is to create the strategic vision in the area of Packaging Technology and Development creating a progressive, comprehensive and self-sustaining packaging capabilities across all BDX segments.

About the role:

The Director will work in close collaboration with plant leadership and functional leaders and will be responsible for identifying, prioritizing, and implementing initiatives and standard methodologies to improve safety, productivity, quality, customer service and/or reducing cost and complexity.

Success will require optimally setting the governance for packaging excellence processes and programs across multiple sites / functions and participate to ensure the effective execution of important program timelines and deliverables for scale.

  • Bring skills in Smart Packaging Innovations, design of secondary packaging and palletization equipment, change to win savings, global program management, sustainability, quality improvements while leading high performance teams to drive:

  • Ideation, planning and being responsible for execution of key projects to improve packaging materials, equipment, performance and process for lower total landed cost (CTW)

  • Packaging Innovation and Technology Sensing

  • Packaging Design for Manufacturing, including development of programs and training

  • Reduction of the BDX Packaging Environmental footprint (Sustainability)

  • Improving the Quality of BD’s packages

  • Overall packaging support as needed for BDX

We are seeking a high energy, motivated and eager leader to provide leadership and develop and drive our strategies focused in and around Packaging.

  • Work across the BDX network driving a team focused on developing key packaging Innovations which meet customers and multiple Business Unit needs.

  • Work across the Segments this roles team will lead idea and strategy development aligning with Procurement, R&D and Operations to create more efficient packages, contributing to the value engineering cost improvement team (CTW).

  • Lead BD teams driving the future of BDX packaging, working vendors and internals SME’s sensing new Technologies, identifying and developing future packaging innovation for both new and existing products/packaging, working to reduce the environmental footprint of BD and improve the quality performance of the packages.

This leader is expected to push our packaging leads outside today’s packaging environment boundaries and explore and create packages which achieve a competitive advantage and improved customer experience through pioneering features, reduced cost and enhanced quality. To support these expectations overall responsibility of the packaging development center in Columbus, NE and the resources which support the lab and its deliverables. Additionally, this role will have direct reporting relationships across participating BDX business units to drive and be responsible for the BDX deliverables.

The team will have a significant contribution to the CTW programs of the Business Units for $500MM+ packaging spend; developing and sharing ideas, driving feasibility, testing and the development of the opportunities translating to bottom line savings for the businesses.

  • The team is accountable to create a packaging portfolio which includes a year-on-year plan of packaging changes to deliver savings on an annual basis.

These projects are expected to continue to maintain or enhance the quality of the packaging while reducing the environmental footprint, ensuring the desired value of the customer.

The team will build capability within the organization in packaging for both process, secondary packaging and palletization equipment, and package design. The team’s expected to align with DFM for packaging, responsible for implementing and maintaining the training of Engineers in R&D and MTI. Additionally, the team will continue to build capability through the education of site Engineers and Mechanics to operate the packaging equipment more efficiently and optimally.
