Job Description
Drive Digital Transformation and Continuous Improvement
The Director of Smart Factory is responsible for developing the vision and leading the execution of the Smart Factory transformation through the implementation of Smart Factory technologies throughout the BD Medical Segment’s 38 manufacturing sites worldwide. This is a newly developed, key strategic role that will work closely with business and manufacturing site leaders to ensure a cohesive strategy development and implementation plan. Provide leadership and build the team to lead the continuous evolvement of Smart Factory Technologies to define and develop standards, best practices, governance, application of Lean principles, and technical expertise in an organized manner which is secure, scalable, and sustainable. Smart Factory will include elements of digital, automation, robotics, data acquisition, internet of things and artificial intelligence to accelerate growth and maintain / gain a competitive advantage and support the Medical Segment Strategic Imperatives.
Reporting to the Vice President of Manufacturing Technology Innovation, the Director of Smart Factory will work closely with business unit counterparts, in addition to peers in the Manufacturing/Operations, Supply Chain, Quality, Regulatory, Finance, and commercial organizations. They will also effectively work with the regional organizations in developing and executing cost and capital plans, ensuring alignment between the function, region, and business. The position will coordinate activities to drive the implementation of Smart Factory technology use cases to deliver savings and improved performance on an annual basis. These projects are expected to drive value through increased asset utilization, improving OEE, optimizing labor, improving quality, reducing costs, and improving customer satisfaction.
The position will maintain strong relationships with counterparts in each business unit, ensuring timely and transparent alignment between Segment and business unit goals/strategies, BD Excellence, Operations, TGS, IT/OT, and Engineering organizations.
Education, Experience, and Capabilities Required:
Progressive experience leading operations strategy, roadmaps and digital transformation of global manufacturing sites (30+ preferred)
Development of teams in the continuous improvement of Industry 4.0 initiatives; build, deploy and upgrade digital technologies best practices
Demonstrated ability to establish, implement, and sustain a Smart Factory team
Strong financial aptitude with proven ability to perform robust cost/benefit analyses.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, enabling the ability to influence decisions based on sound rationale.
Strong computer skills, including effective use of email and virtual meeting systems for remote communication and organization purposes.
Strong project management skills, including effective meeting and workshop facilitation skills.
Strong analytical, problem solving and judgment skills.
Proven interpersonal skills and leadership capability. Must be able to effectively communicate across the organization, from the manufacturing floor to senior leadership.
Demonstrated ability to drive transversal change via “influence without authority”.
Education, Experience, and Capabilities Preferred:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Finance, Supply Chain, or equivalent.
Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Logistics, Materials, or Supply Chain Management.
Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt, or Lean Leader Certification (or equivalent)
