Job Description SummaryAs a member of BD’s Tax team, you will play a key role in planning and implementing BD’s global tax strategy. The Director – Tax Planning is primarily responsible for activities related to operational tax planning. The role partners with Finance, the Functions, Corporate Development, and the Business Units to lead all aspects of tax due diligence and structuring for new opportunities, acquisitions, dispositions and operational changes at BD.

Job Description

Planning

  • Provide direct support to VP Tax Planning on enterprise-wide tax, operating and business transaction projects

  • Develop and implement tax planning strategies to reduce tax expense, eliminate tax exposures, minimize audit deficiencies, and maintain a competitive effective tax rate

  • Develop manage and maintain relationships with key individuals across Finance, the Functions, Corporate Development, and the Business Units to ensure tax is at the forefront of business decisions and any tax risks associated with operational changes are proactively managed/mitigated

  • Responsibilities include maintaining a deep understanding of various entities, transaction flows, risks and functions, and advising on the various intercompany transactions, relationships and agreements.

Provision

  • Work closely with BD’s Tax Accounting team to ensure the operational aspects of BD’s US tax provision are properly recorded on a quarterly and annual basis.

  • Accountable and responsible for application of ASC740/FIN48 for all planning areas enumerated above.

  • Maintain ownership of tax internal controls applicable to the Tax Planning team and updating of same as appropriate

Compliance

  • Work closely with other members of BD’s Tax Planning team to understand the international aspects of BD’s operations, tax planning initiatives and transactions to ensure proper US reporting, and provide computational information needed for tax planning.

Audit

  • Assist BD’s Tax Controversy group in providing requested information and defending BD’s positions.

EXPERIENCE and SKILLS:

  • 10 - 15 years of work experience in a tax department at a corporation or equivalent experience at a Big 4 accounting firm or law firm

  • 5+ years of progressive experience within a complex, SEC registrant company or commensurate progressive experience with SEC registrant clients for the tax division of an accounting firm

  • Experience with legal tax structures for corporations and partnerships

  • Experience with TCJA

  • Expertise for new and emerging tax issues, both domestically and internationally

  • Issue Spotting including providing detailed review comments on work product and proactively raising potential issues based on regulatory, operational or other changes in business circumstance.

  • Project Management including project scoping, and work plan and communication plan development.

  • Leadership including 1)demonstrated ability to mentor, develop, and supervise others directly, 2) focus on creating a vision, aligning interests, and inspiring others to join group efforts/initiatives and positively contribute, and 3) ability to align interests, manage conflict and different points of view in a professional fashion, with the ability to employ different leadership styles in the process

  • Must demonstrate a conceptual and business oriented approach to communicating taxes and tax planning, and be able to effectively communicate with and influence non-tax business leaders

  • Highly motivated self-starter and have demonstrated a commitment to continuous improvement

  • Strong aptitude for identifying and implementing process improvements, including the use of new tax technology and automation tools

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills

EDUCATION:

  • BA/BS Tax, Economics, Accounting, Business, Finance or other similar field

  • J.D. required

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • JD, CFA, CPA, etc.
