The Manager, Internal Communication will be responsible for developing and implementing employee communications throughout BD Diabetes Care with an emphasis on connecting employees to our business priorities and driving engagement. The manager will develop strong, consistent communications for all internal stakeholders that builds these groups into effective ambassadors for the business. This includes ensuring internal stakeholders are well-informed about organizational initiatives and successes, enabling company-wide conversations and allowing employees to connect with each other in positive ways.

The Manager plays a critical role in fostering and supporting a culture that empowers employees with information, access to leadership, and recognition. This person is responsible for partnering with stakeholders to develop and implement communication that supports business objectives and effectively engage internal audiences. This position is also responsible for articulating the DC vision and accomplishments outward across BDX.

Job Responsibilities

This position is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Enhance and accelerate associate engagement by increasing understanding of critical business events, BU strategy, key business challenges, business priorities, status of key objectives/initiatives and external environmental factors that affect BU performance.

  • Act as a consultant and strategic thought partner to President, HR Leader and LT to understand audience needs and proactively shape internal communication. Partner with LT and ELT to create integrated core messages that will guide all employee / internal communications.

  • Based on key messages, business priorities / progress and external environmental impact, develop and execute an on-going, strategic, year-long integrated global employee communications strategy that informs associates about what leadership needs them to “Know”, “Believe” and “Do”.

  • Create, gain approval and implement a “best in class” comprehensive global, internal communication plan, including managing messages and timing, executing the communications calendar and forums.

  • Identify and leverage traditional and innovative annual and quarterly communication vehicles / materials and tactics that optimize deep and broad organizational reception and two-way engagement. Including global town halls, videos, leadership tools, social media, leadership interview, podcasts, blogs, speeches, associate forums and Maxwell.

  • Periodically assess and report effectiveness of communication to associates and adjust strategy that improves effectiveness.

  • Encourage leaders and managers to utilize internal communications as an effective tool to drive change and rally the organization.

  • Empower leaders and managers to be effective communicators to associates by providing appropriate tools and training.

  • Provide ongoing education to internal stakeholders to raise awareness of the value of communications and alignment to business objectives.

  • Liaise with cross-functional/cross-regional teams across the global DC organization to identify events, news, and opportunities to share with DC employees.

  • Develop/leverage social media tools and strategy to engage employees and enhance two-way communication.

  • Partner with counterparts across BD and implement employee engagement strategies.

  • Oversee the distribution of internal communication, ensuring accurate and timely delivery of information to key stakeholders

Performance & Success Measures

  • Attitudes Surveys (with key stakeholders) / VOA

  • Employee engagement scores

  • Improvement vs baseline on key even attendance (like Town Halls) and or participation in surveys or two-way dialogue

  • 360-Degree Peer Feedback


Education & Experience

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English, or relevant discipline.

  • A minimum of 5 to 8 years of relevant professional experience required. Internal communications preferred.

  • Masters in Communication or MBA a plus

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Advanced level of copywriting and editing

  • Demonstrated experience with media and leveraging a variety of communications tools and channels (email, social media, visual, etc.).

  • Strategic Planner: You help the people you work with to see the big picture and think strategically. You set clear objectives, probe with questions and help them solve their problems in a way they didn’t expect.

  • Communication Master: You have advanced skill in writing, editing, presenting and facilitation. You know how to create and manage vehicles and channels (including new media). You can leverage content from multiple sources and work with many contributors. You can convey complex topics to employees quickly and easily know about the issue and are prepared to take action.

  • Creative/Visual Thinker: You enjoy the challenge of thinking about a problem in new ways. You’re able to express complex concepts as simple, clear ideas. You prefer to think visually – using images to communicate key messages.

  • Project Manager: You’re able to juggle multiple projects with tight timelines

  • Business Acumen: You understand the business environment in general and medical devices and/or healthcare in particular. You’re a quick study and are able to get up to speed on new issues right away.

  • Team Player: You work well with people in a variety of disciplines, and can partner with other colleagues to meet objectives.

  • Terrific Listener: You are open to different experiences and perspectives, and know how to listen to key stakeholders to develop a full understanding of issues.

  • Effective Counselor: You know how to give advice and make recommendations to key stakeholders, including Senior Management.
