The Intellectual Property team in the BD Law Group is looking for a Legal Specialist to support professionals within the IP team. The position has some flexibility as to specific office location (among BD sites in which one or more IP professionals are located), and regular in-office presence is expected under a hybrid office/home arrangement.

Meeting Facilitation (e.g., scheduling, agenda prep, meeting minutes, follow-ups)
Practice Area Specific Job Duties:
Intellectual Property
Expertise in developing various reports, running standard or custom reports, and formatting reports professionally for distribution to IP team or other BD associates
Ability to analyze reports, summarize for IP professional, and advise IP professional accordingly
Expertise in opening, correcting, updating and otherwise manipulating records in Anaqua IP Management System
Understanding of workflow of IP management systems
Understanding of outside preparation/prosecution counsel processes; ability to analyze processes, identify areas for improvement, and implement improvements in coordination with operations team
Perform and analyze Tasks in Anaqua
Run and analyze patent searches in AcclaimIP
M&A Diligence
- Support pre-diligence activities, e.g., by obtaining and reviewing patent or other public information, analyzing data and make recommendations to IP professional
Patent Committee meetings
Prepare and analyze reports in Anaqua, e.g., upcoming patent prosecution deadlines, monthly new filings, issuance and abandonment reports, and other routine or periodic reports as requested
Prepare PowerPoint slides and agendas for patent committee meetings
Facilitate patent committee meetings, including tracking and managing execution of meeting outcomes/action items
Identify areas for process improvements, and implement such improvements
Inventor incentive payment program
Support BU R&D organization (particularly R&D award manager) in providing incentive award notifications and processing payments
Manage any unique OUS incentive award issues (e.g., Germany)
Patent Awards
Run Anaqua reports on qualified IDRs, First Filings and US grants to analyze award criteria and ensure proper recipients and invitees to award events
Manage any BU-specific recognition programs (e.g., hall of fame)
Manage procurement of patent plaques and/or other physical awards
Manage use of Yammer or other systems to acknowledge patent grants or otherwise acknowledge innovation activities
Member of award event planning teams in coordination with R&D
Coordinate IP training
- Partner with IP professional for BU to assess IP training needs, prepare presentation and course materials, and manage all training logistics, including liaising directly with BU on scheduling, location, attendees
Patents
Obtain signatures on patent-related documents such as powers of attorney, assignments, and declarations
Liaise with patent firms on all logistical or administrative patent preparation or prosecution matters
Analyze patent processes and resultant data, identify areas for improvement, and implement improvements

Ability to understand and leverage relevant legal-specific technology tools.
Ability to manage legal billing systems, including analyzing reports, reviewing and approving invoices, opening/updating matters, etc.
Advanced capabilities in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, including ability to create high-quality PowerPoint files suitable for sharing with senior leaders
Ability to facilitate and manage large meetings, including logistics, scheduling, coordinating IT/AV needs, presenters, outside speakers, and directly facilitating meeting
Demonstrated ability to use sound, independent judgment and discretion
Demonstrated ability to interpret and advise on relevant policies and procedures
Qualifications:
Minimum of a High School Diploma required
Bachelor’s degree preferred
At least 5 years of relevant experience with technology, systems and/or related experience such as complex project management
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to independently identify key issues, develop and implement creative solutions
Prior experience supporting a legal function is a plus
