Medical Affairs Program Manager (Global - 100% remote)

The Medical Affairs Program Manager (Global) is responsible for the Investigator Sponsored Studies (ISS) process across Medical Affairs Business Units (BUs), including daily operational oversight and other types of requested clinical research submitted through BD’s chosen system. The Medical Affairs Program Manager will be the Global Process Owner for Investigator Sponsored Studies (ISS), Collaboration Research Agreements (CRA) and Request for Proposals (RFP).

The incumbent is accountable for implementing necessary process changes and ensuring compliance with regional and global regulations as directed by Ethics and Compliance and BD Legal Team. Must have a solid knowledge base and understanding of clinical studies and external funding processes in general. This role works closely with the BDX Grants Manager to ensure ongoing process improvements. The incumbent is responsible for updating corresponding policies, SOPs, and Work Instructions for approval by the Medical Affairs Governance Board. The incumbent will work closely with internal VPs of MA, legal, regulatory, E&C, BU Compliance Committee Members, and the external stakeholders concerning ISSs and CRAs. The Medical Affairs Program Manager will interface with many different departments within BD and must concisely present ideas, have strong collaboration skills, and be detail oriented. This position reports to the Director, Medical Affairs Governance and Training Excellence.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead in the operational development and implementation of effective, efficient, and compliant processes and review ISS requests, including departmental processes, procedures, reporting, and metrics.

  • Ensure careful evaluation, optimal communications, and timely response to ISS requests; ensure that status updates are sent to requesters when delays beyond established turn-around times may occur.

  • Implement a global process for Collaboration Research Agreements and drive an integrated vision for CRA operations by ensuring appropriate approval by CMO and Chief Compliance Officer.

  • Lead as the ISS Operations subject-matter expert for Medical Affairs including recommendations for implementing continuous improvements and streamlining ISS.

  • Provide support to other operational functions and act as a subject matter expert to develop corporate learnings about external software and the ISS process and assist in implementing technology improvements.

  • Aggregate ISS information for qualitative and quantitative measures; Conduct various program analyses and develop status reports as needed; Identify and report inconsistencies with ISS policies and procedures.

  • Work with BDX functions, including the Law Group, to assist in preparing legal agreements between BD and external parties. Ensure the smooth, accurate, and timely agreements are in place with appropriate milestone payments.

  • Maintain a close working relationship with each BU database of product costs as required for transparency reporting.

  • Maintain a schedule of supported programs across BUs and track outcomes from funded programs; Identify programs on the monthly BU Compliance Committee agenda.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum Bachelor level degree preferably in life sciences, business, supply chain, or JD with equivalent experience preferred

  • 5 years related experience in the medical device/pharmaceutical industry within clinical research, medical affairs, compliance, higher education, or C-suite experience is preferred

  • Leadership skills in working with all levels of management and consulting with key business stakeholders

  • Proven ability to analyze data and provide solutions to complex problems

  • Knowledge of the legal, compliance, and transparency requirements associated with grants and donations

  • Ability to work clearly and courageously to manage difficult conversations through direct and constructive dialogue

  • Ability to communicate impactful initiatives to stakeholder audience(s) through the proper channels and modes of communication

  • Experience with multinational integration activities and multi-cultural working is preferred

  • Ability to coordinate and harmonize workflow activities across multiple time zones, achieve goals and drive process and technical innovation

  • Skilled at working effectively in a collaborative team environment where results are achieved through influence and the incorporation of multiple points of view

Skills and Capabilities

  • Strong knowledge of MS Office platforms – including Excel for creating reports and dashboards

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks, (project management is an asset)

  • Proactive team player able to succeed in a fast paced, dynamic environment with mission-driven colleagues

  • Willingness and ability to learn additional technology platforms to manage business intranet page
