BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) Senior Automation Engineer in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey
Job Description SummaryReporting to OPS Sustaining Engineering, the Senior Automation Engineer is responsible for developing, improving and implementing manufacturing and packaging process technologies for BD PAS products. The goal of these projects will be to successfully implement Quality improvements, Capacity expansions and/or Cost Reductions. Works closely with R&D, Quality and manufacturing locations to implement these improved or new technologies.
Knowledge & Problem Solving
Primary activity shall be to develop specifications, obtain quotations, install, improve and implement custom built automation and packaging equipment for the purpose of manufacturing medical devices.
Working knowledge of wide variety of technologies: High volume, high speed assembly and dispense equipment, vision inspections, ultrasonic welding, UV curing, packaging, robotic technology and, pick-n-place.
Lead projects and/or provide technical support in the overall equipment design, fabrication, implementation and optimization of varied and complex portions of existing and new production and packaging lines.
Provides theoretical and hands-on engineering support to manufacturing and packaging operations. Proven ability to work in a team environment which identifies root causes then develops and pursues plans toward their resolution.
Demonstrates complete understanding of a wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in a manufacturing and packaging process technology. Has general knowledge of other process technologies. Provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, and practical.
Contributes to the completion of specific programs and projects.
Discretion / Latitude
- Works under general direction. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions.
This position will serve as a technical liaison between the PAS business Unit and manufacturing locations.
Works with cross functional team to investigate & implement solutions to major manufacturing and packaging issues.
Manages and executes feasibility studies on manufacturing and packaging automated equipment.
Must be able to develop and execute validations protocols, engineering studies and design of experiments.
Initiates and support labelling and barcode initiatives
Manages projects to design, prototype, build and commercialize manufacturing and packaging process equipment. Initiate, plan, execute, monitor, control, and close these projects.
Manages capital spending and project schedules.
Develops specifications and acceptance protocols to purchase production and packaging equipment.
Manages vendors in the design, development and implementation of manufacturing and packaging equipment.
Applies six-sigma and lean manufacturing methodologies to optimize manufacturing and packaging equipment.
Develops processes by designing and/or performing experimental testing, data analysis, preparation of reports, and providing recommendations.
Support the manufacturing plants in cost reduction, standardization and equipment upgrade projects.
Provides input into project technical strategy.
Cross Functional Collaboration
Works with Quality, R&D, Clinical and Regulatory team members to ensure successful implementation of projects.
Works with diverse functions and manufacturing sites to achieve project goals.
Collaborates with other teams of engineers and technicians and coordinate resources to achieve project and business goals.
Manage capital budgets and provides status reports to management in a timely basis.
Follows division policies and guidelines.
Other duties as assigned.
Travel required between 15% and 50% depending upon project stages.
Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
A minimum of 5 years engineering experience. Preferred background is in packaging and automated manufacturing equipment with process development in high volume manufacturing. Experience with medical devices, in-vitro diagnostic and pharmaceutical products are a plus.
Experience implementing process improvements and launching new equipment into a manufacturing environment. Understands all phases of projects; brainstorming, scoping, budgeting, writing specifications, quoting, capital proposals, vendor management, coordinating installations, running validations.
Experience with label printing and barcode specifications and requirements, as well as packaging cost analysis.
