Summary

NA Senior EHS Distribution Mgr will oversee the EHS&S strategy, programs and performance for NA Distribution Centers. The Senior EHS Distribution MGR is responsible for overall EHS&S for all of the NA Distribution Centers (11 sites in total)). Site EHS coordinators will have dotted line reporting into the Senior EHS Manager. This role leads and ensures continuous progress of the NA DC’s safety culture, compliance readiness, training and capabilities assessments, and sustainability performance to meet BD’s publicly stated safety and sustainability goals.

The Senior EHS Manager provides leadership for all EHS&S programs and activities within the NA DCs and ensures continued alignment of the function with the strategy of NA Distribution Operations. They will establish targets and goals that reflect continuous improvement in the company’s performance in EHS&S areas. They will maintain a focus on EHS&S among the strategic changes made by NA Distribution Operations – including architecture changes, MHE technology, Conveyor installation, and new technology deployment..

The Senior EHS Manager will work closely with the professionals at the 11 NA Distribution Centers, and with their respective site, operations and cluster leadership. They will work to develop EHS bench-strength within the NA Distribution Centers, and subsequent talent pipeline for EHS roles through capabilities assessments and cross-pollination of talent for projects needing EHS&S support within the NA Distribution centers.

The Senior EHS Manager will also provide support to, and functions as a liaison with, EHS Audit, Distribution, Supply Chain, Global Real Estate and Construction, Procurement, Research and Development, Legal, Sales/Marketing, Government Affairs and other related groups on EHS matters

Responsibilities

  • Overall accountability for EHS and Sustainability performance within the NA Distribution Centers – safety culture and performance, environmental compliance, and creating value through sustainability (ensuring pursuit of BD’s publicly stated sustainability goals)

  • Talent development among site EHS professionals within the NA Distribution Centers.

  • Ensure readiness for EHS Audits and 3rd party audits of EHS Management Systems

  • Support overall NA Distribution Operations with EHS expertise

  • Anticipate EHS issues and risks associated with change and growth within the NA Distribution Centers, such as new technologies, operations, or architecture changes. Provide technical leadership for special risks within the NA Distribution Centers through expertise, or matching of site EHS capabilities to support.

  • Work with peer Cluster/ NA Distribution Center EHS&S leaders, and Sustainability/EHS leadership, to establish consistent metrics to measure EHS and Sustainability performance of the NA Distribution Centers; ensure data collection processes are in place and data is accessible through EHS software systems.

  • Actively participate in outside networking organizations in order to anticipate new trends and requirements, to learn best practices, and to provide visibility for BD’s EHS&S programs and performance.

  • Guide, coach and assist the NA Distribution Centers in developing EHS&S culture that is embedded in the continuous improvement activities of the company.

  • Assess the impact of new and proposed environmental, health and safety laws and regulations on the company and its operations, ensuring compliance readiness for Corporate EHS Audits

  • Work with sites within the NA Distribution Centers to prepare for new/emerging EHS&S requirements, such as those related to Labor.

  • Establish networks within businesses, segments and NA Distribution Centers, to communicate best practices, promote EHS awareness and draw attention to the management of significant EHS concerns - communicating to senior management as appropriate.

  • Drive site awareness about safety issues by encouraging employees and management to evaluate their own behaviors and communicate with one another about safety issues. Work with site to ensure effective site safety committee that involves management as well.

Qualifications

  • B.S. / B.A. in related EHS/scientific discipline

  • 10+ years of experience working in environmental health and safety management; extensive knowledge EHS regulations, best practices and EHS management systems.

  • 10+ years influencing site leadership and development of on-site EHS personnel

  • Previous experience influencing multiple sites in EHS best practices with accountability to TRIR rate and site EHS compliance.

  • Must be a solution-oriented team player who is capable of leading a team and working collaboratively across multiple businesses, regions and functions.

  • Experience driving continuous improvement with lean/six sigma preferred

  • Strong strategic work style and proven ability to work collaboratively at various levels of the organization

  • Ability to analyze and interpret EHS regulations and their applicability to different parts of the organization

  • Experience developing and presenting recommendations at an executive level

  • Strong oral and written communications skills

  • Willing to travel domestically and internationally, as required

  • Ability to influence external and internal work systems and processes
