Job Description Summary

This strategic role, supported by internal regional safety resources in the EMEA and Greater Asia regions, will provide construction health & safety subject matter expertise to the Global Construction (GC) project management team, which is supporting more than (150) facility design and construction projects globally.

The primary objective of this role is to develop and foster a safety culture for construction projects that is consistent with BD’s Safety Policy which states:

This objective will be accomplished through the application of BD’s Global Construction Environmental Health & Safety Standard for all construction projects.

The successful candidate will work closely with external vendors and internal procurement, legal, corporate EHS & Sustainability, and other project stakeholders teams. This senior manager role will lead the strategic development and implementation of BD’s Global Construction Safety Program and include management of the contractor pre-qualification process, reviewing and approving EHS work plans, monitoring and documenting safety metrics across all BD construction projects, management of 3rd-party safety vendors and management of a construction safety audit program to ensure adherence and compliance with BD’s Global Construction Safety Program.

Responsibilities:

  • Support site-based project teams with the initial setup and implementation of BD’s Global Construction Safety Management Program.

  • Engage and run 3rd-party companies to perform owner-controlled safety oversight on larger, more complex projects.

  • Participate in high-hazard identification and pre-task planning including reviewing Contractor Health & Safety plans, Job Hazard Analysis, Lift Plans, excavations, etc.

  • Lead and/or assists in the investigation of construction related incidents and near misses and the implementation of corrective actions.

  • Publish global Construction Safety Alerts for all incidents and near misses identifying the root cause analysis and key findings.

  • Chairperson of the BD Global Construction Safety Steering Team (GCSST). Interface and integrate with BD Corporate Environmental Health & Safety and Sustainability teams.

  • Be the tactical Point of Contact responsible for assisting the Global Construction Project Managers with the application of BD’s Global Construction Environmental Health & Safety Standard for all construction projects.

  • Be accountable for consistent and accurate execution of the BD’s Contractor Pre-qualification Process.

  • Assist with the development and communication of clear contractor safety roles and responsibilities to support the construction sites for Project Managers, EHS Managers, and other collaborators.

  • Develop Contractor EHS training program including a training inventory, audience, frequency to deliver to key internal and external partners that enables sustaining a robust program.

  • Provide coaching and mentoring related to safety for internal and external project team members.

  • Develop and support execution of formal internal construction safety audit program.

  • Develop documented methodology and inspection checklists conducted routinely to ensure BD oversight during construction projects.

  • Conduct ad-hoc site visits to perform formal inspections, support construction managers, participate in other site-based activities.

  • Support the Category Procurement team in maintaining current safety requirements in relevant contracts.

  • Stay attuned to changing regulations and industry trends that may influence BD’s Global Construction Safety Management program.

  • Ensure contractors are entering safety metrics for all active construction projects to BD’s proprietary database on a monthly basis and publish monthly reports.

Requirements

Education:

  • Possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational, Health and Safety; engineering or other related fields from an accredited university (preferred).

Experience :

  • 10+ years demonstrated experience in construction safety management.

  • 5+ years working within a dedicated safety role.

Additional Qualifications

  • Ability to apply a positive, continuous improvement approach and seek ways to improve.

  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, including an ability to influence and partner with all levels of the organization and outside contacts.

  • Ability to adapt well to fast-paced environments with changing circumstances, direction, and strategy.

  • Possess strong analytical skills with demonstrated problem solving ability and experience writing technical and procedural documents.

  • Experience owning safety program strategy, end to end delivery, and communicating results to senior leadership.

  • Experience with construction safety contractor management program or providing oversight for 3rd party services/contractors.

  • Experience using data and metrics to drive improvements.

  • Possess (or currently pursuing) a Professional Engineer (PE), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or other recognized professional certification

  • Possess relevant OSHA certifications, or equivalents

  • Ability to travel to all BD Sites (up to 50% travel required).

  • Most travel will be domestic.
