Job Description SummaryBD Medical, Medication Delivery Solutions is engaged in the development of innovative, new-to-market or new-to-business product platforms and their underlying technologies. A key role within the R&D Architecture & Innovation Group is the Senior Manager Prototyping & New Technology, who will lead efforts to create, assess and iterate on early concepts and technologies. The Prototyping & New Technology team will work closely with Innovation & Biodesign, Business Group R&D Concept Leads, and Strategic Innovation.

Job Description

The goal of the Prototyping & New Technology team is to advance prototypes from early feasibility to concept phase – with a strong customer needs focus. Concepts will be advanced through an iterative approach of human factors and user experience research informing subsequent prototype designs. The Senior Manager Prototyping & New Technology will report into the Director of Innovation & BioDesign.

Technology development work will be targeted at deliverables appropriate for the stage of the innovation program, and contribute to the work of Innovation Cells:

Innovation Stages 1&2 (to Gate A): Technology landscape work will identify existing solutions and the state of the art. For down-selected technologies, technology readiness will be assessed. In addition to building an understanding of what is available commercially and in the academic world, subject matter experts and key opinion leaders may be tapped to understand the governing science and applicable technical approaches. Preliminary patent searches and IP landscaping will be performed.

Innovation Stage 3 (to Gate B): The team will further assess technology readiness and demonstrate basic intended functionality using minimum viable prototypes and/or functional breadboards (proof of principle). The need for additional technology development will be determined. Depending on the opportunity, this may involve product and technology performance evaluations which will inform an organic vs. inorganic development recommendation. The IP assessment will be refined based on evolution of concepts and enabling technologies.

The Prototyping team will also perform technology feasibility assessments of internal and external concepts and technology development in areas outside existing Platform Engineering focus areas.

The team is a small nimble team, so individual responsibilities will span the objectives of A&I, and pivot frequently.

Strong engagement with the Innovation and Biodesign team is key to this role. The teams will work hand-in-hand to clarify customer needs, translating needs into concepts, bringing concepts into an innovation-stage-appropriate physical embodiment, iterating on those concepts address needs.

The team consists of individuals with backgrounds in:

  • Engineering, including Electrical, Mechanical and Chemical

  • Intellectual Property Management

  • Industrial Design

  • Human Factors & User Experience

  • Front-end program management: create project scope, plans and execute projects; manage budgets

  • Synthesize complex and multi-factor information to make assessments without full information

  • Consolidate information into technical summaries and presentations

  • Strong customer-facing skills for gaining feedback on prototype concepts

  • Inventive and Innovative mindset

  • Lead external design & research activities

  • Work closely with Corporate IP Group to drive IP management process across MDS

  • Inspire the organization around new opportunities


  • 6 – 10 years working experience: 3-5 years in front-end capacity

  • Successful track record of creating new concepts and IP

  • Successful track record of delivering results through building and leading high performing teams.

  • Experience establishing customer requirements from defined needs specifications and translating to product requirements

  • Bachelors in Engineering

  • MS and/or PhD preferred
