Job Description SummaryReporting to the Associate Director, Senior Manager, R&D is sought to build a world class R&D organization accountable for product development and sustaining engineering to meet business objectives of Specimen Management Business Group (BD Life Sciences – Integrated Diagnostics Solutions). The Senior Manager R&D in this role is responsible for driving technical excellence, operating with a high level of independence driving/making R&D decisions on product and process changes as well as to effectively select, develop, and motivate a staff of highly skilled scientists and engineers.
Job Description
The primary responsibilities for this position are:
Contribute, Lead and provide guidance on critical initiatives on behalf of R&D as required to support needs of Specimen Management business group
Effectively recruit, select, develop, organize, and motivate a staff of skilled associates globally.
Optimize resource utilization, continuously explore ways to improve throughput, effectiveness and efficiency of the teams
Demonstrate strong and clear accountability for the group’s development, performance, and results.
Accountable for improving and further developing processes and best practices.
Ensure regular updates are provided to the leadership team on key initiatives within the portfolio.
Accountable for the successful execution of key initiatives within the portfolio.
Align dedicated resources cross-functionally to optimize and ensure execution success.
Ensure product development process are followed through right execution and technical rigor.
Ensure adequate support to Customer, sales, WW manufacturing, and OEM support.
Support development & maintenance of detailed budgets in accordance with project, department, and business objectives.
Ensure efficient and effective transition of product development programs to high volume manufacturing in locations throughout the world.
Identify, assess, and develop state-of-the-art organizational capability in:
Project leadership, execution and communication.
Technology, product development, continuous improvement & change control.
Six Sigma (DFSS) gate reviews for New Product Development & Sustaining Engineering projects.
Productivity metrics to constantly measure performance.
Critical parameters management
Test method development, Product validation and verification
Maximizing throughput, effectiveness and efficiency.
Accountable for leading and organizing functional reviews as required.
Active engagement in detailed review of cross-functional plans and be accountable for their success.
Perform periodic reviews of progress against plans. Ensure plans are executed appropriately within department. Be accountable for timely delivery of all development deliverables as specified.
Develop and apply innovative approaches to ensure best outcomes in all aspects of the role creating an environment in which innovation can flourish through empowerment, encouragement, and support.
Ensure compliance with BD and applicable local, state and federal quality policies, procedures, practices and regulations.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelors Degree in an Engineering Discipline required
12+ years of experience in a combination of medical device and product development with BS OR 10+ years of experience in a combination of medical device and product development with Masters Degree OR 8+ years of experience in a combination of medical device and product development with PhD required
A minimum of 3-5 years of demonstrated experience in managing and developing direct reports required
Additional Qualifications
Strong technical judgment and extensive technical leadership skills.
Demonstrated capability of leading R&D product development projects and sustaining engineering teams
Experience in guiding team/individuals to develop technical solutions to complex problems.
Sound knowledge of engineering first principles.
R&D functional planning, requirement generation and technical (DFSS/Design/Cross functional) reviews for all product development phases.
Strong project management, prioritizing and multi-tasking skills to work within tight deadlines.
Ability to effectively and clearly communicate concepts, ideas and knowledge to other individuals and teams.
Experience in directing associates and leading small cross-functional groups is required.
Proficient in Microsoft Project.
Disciplined phase-gate product development processes & project planning.
Knowledge of Six Sigma (DMAIC) practices, and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) methodologies.
Product development considerations for tightly controlled, high-volume manufacturing process.
Strong creative, analytical and problem solving skills required.
Good written & verbal communication skills.
