This position will work across the Medical Segment and BDX network focused on developing key Smart Factory Innovations which meet multiple Business Unit needs. This role will lead efforts in driving the future of BDX Molding, working with BD’s vendors and internals SME’s sensing new Technologies, identifying and developing future molding innovations for both new and existing products.

Job Overview:

Reporting to the Director of Manufacturing Technology Innovation, this position is responsible for leadership and guidance to drive Molding Technology and Innovation in support of the Strategic Imperatives within the Medical Segment and across BDX globally. The objective of this role is to support the Business Units and BD molding community to implement the strategic vision for molding technology with a focus on improving asset utilization, optimizing labor and capital spend, and the implementation of Smart Factory digital backbone for molding, Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), molding process optimization to improve OEE, maintenance program to reduce unplanned downtime, and supporting change to win initiatives.

The selected candidate will work in close collaboration with functional leaders and will be responsible for identifying, prioritizing, and implementing Smart Molding initiatives and standard methodologies to improve safety, productivity, quality, customer service and/or reducing cost and complexity. To be successful the incumbent will effectively set the governance for MES systems, Molding Process Optimization, and manufacturing performance standard programs across multiple sites / functions, and participate to ensure the effective execution of important program timelines and deliverables for scale. This position will bring skills in Smart Molding Innovations, change to win savings, sustainability, and quality improvements.

The Molding COE / MTI team is looking for a high energy, motivated and eager leader to provide leadership and develop and drive our strategies focused in and around Molding Technology and Innovation. This position will work across the Medical Segment and BDX network focused on developing key Smart Factory Innovations which meet multiple Business Unit needs. This role will lead efforts in driving the future of BDX Molding, working with BD’s vendors and internals SME’s sensing new Technologies, identifying and developing future molding innovations for both new and existing products.

Incumbent must work within commuting distance of a BD Medical Segment site.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop a strategy for a Manufacturing Execution System for Molding and partner with sites to prove feasibility, confirm business case and benefits, then develop implementation plans to scale quickly on both new and existing equipment.

  • Responsible for Molding Process Optimization and technical improvements to further reduce component costs of internal sites by increasing molding cell utilization, reducing scrap, reducing changeover time, and improving quality.

  • Build mold maintenance capability through best practice sharing, training, and retention through providing a challenging and inclusive network of SME’s. Foster a collaborative environment for sharing engineering knowledge throughout the BDX molding network.

  • Identify and sense new technologies that can be applied to innovate new products or make current products or equipment more efficient.

Competencies:

  • Working knowledge of plastic resins and processing, injection molding process, tooling & tooling maintenance, total cost of ownership, and an understanding of cost drivers.

  • Demonstrated leadership of a technical team, project management, new product introduction, injection molding process development, new technology evaluation/implementation, and data analysis skills.

  • Accountable to lead strategies, programs, innovations and support business prioritization and deliverables.

  • Responsible for Continuous Improvement saving in the areas of Smart Factory for Molding, Mold Process Optimization, reduction of capital spending, and other cost savings initiatives.

  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of internal organization.

Education and Experience:

  • BS degree in Engineering required

  • Advanced degree in Plastics Engineering or Business preferred

  • Master Molder or other comparable scientific molding training program preferred

  • Six Sigma certification or equivalent training preferred

  • At least 10 years’ experience in the design, development, and commercialization of high-volume precision molding. Experience in medical device molding is preferred.

  • Thorough knowledge of metrology and measurement system analysis related to injection molding, management principles and practices, direct cost systems, quality control, mold design and process, manufacturing processes, hot runner system, equipment and purchasing.

  • Significant knowledge of federal, state, or local mandates including, but not restricted to, FDA, SFDA, NHS, EEOC, OSHA, EPA, etc.​Knowledge of GMP and related international requirements preferred
