Job Description Summary
The Sr. Director, Medical Affairs Strategy & Operations supports the Chief Medical Officer and his/her leadership team to create and implement the enabling functional strategy to ensure the efficient and effective achievment of its mission. S/he helps set the strategic direction for the function, identifying initiatives and programs to effectively manage the company’s Medical Safety, governance and compliance needs. The primary focus of the role will be helping to lead the efforts to continually transform the structure, activities, technology and end-to-end processes within Medical Affairs to ensure the Function is positioned to support the needs of BD and its complex and growing product portfolio. The Sr. Director will also ensure that the core Medical Affairs processes are effective and deployed consistent with the goal of world-class functional performance. The Sr. Director ensures strategic alignment with all geographic regions, business segments and applicable global functions.
Leads the overall annual strategic and budget planning activities, ensuring overall organizational alignments and sound fiscal discipline.
Drives an enchanced, disciplined approach to long-term strategic planning.
Enusres that Medical Affairs manages its overall business with an eye towards overall organizational goals while instilling sound business practices that drive successful delivery of fiscal responsbilities and overall Medical Affairs deliverables.
Ensures that Medical Affairs is fit to the future – anticipates and plans for capabilities/digital technologies/resources that are needed in the future as the Healthcare environment changes.
Partners with BU Presidents and leadership teams to understand the BU strategy, vision and imperatives over the Annual Strategic Review (ASR) period.
Accountability for developing a medical market dynamics and opportunity report for each business unit on a yearly basis and as a key input into the annual ASR cycle.
Core process leadership (vendor/supplier management, recruitment management, etc.) and ongoing continuous improvement.
In partnership with IT and the VP’s of Medical Affairs for the BU’s and Regions, is accountable for identifying, qualifying, and driving adoption of technology solutions that drive measurable business outcomes for our business and our customers.
Collaborates and partners with the businesses to enable and support strategic programs and projects where applicable. Provides continuous feedback to improve digital enablement/solutions within Medical Affairs.
Identifies process ‘pain points’ and technology-enabled improvement opportunities. Builds business case for implementation initiatives. Creates appropriate implementation plans – timelines, ownership roles, milestones.
Defines (in partnership with the business) priorities for the business and associated Medical Affairs technology investments.
Serves as the Secretariat for the Medical Affairs Leadership Team helping to ensure the leadership agendas support the strategic priorities of the function.
Medical Affairs Communications: contributes heavily towards the execution of function-wide communications (Webcasts, Town Hall Meetings, Announcements). This would include preparing agendas, content, presentations.
Prepares presentations for internal and external meetings.
Assists CMO with speechwriting for internal / external meetings and with Board of Directors preparation as needed.
- The Sr. Director, Medical Affairs Strategy & Operations drives the strategy across all geographic regions, business segments and corporate functions. S/he helps ensure that the global Medical Affairs processes are fully optimized across BD and the Medical Affairs associates are fully capable to meet the evolving business needs. This role is required to influence a large, globally based organization to identify and implement opportunities for process/technology/resource optimization and associate capability development.
Sphere of Influence:
The Sr. Director reports to the EVP & Chief Medical Officer.
S/he plays a key role in influencing significant Functional decisions and resource planning. S/he will positively influence behaviors and the desired culture changes related to Medical Affairs across BD globally. The Sr. Director manages and influences a global network of touch points across the breadth of BD to drive strategy implementation for the overall function.
The Sr. Director operates in a very dynamic environment, constantly balancing marketplace dynamics, commercial strategy, medical strategy and R&D direction – positions plays key role in creating alignment across these varous dimensions.
The Sr. Director is responsible for ensuring we bring medical strategy and patient needs into decision-making processes to ensure the utmost in medical and scientific integrity is all that the organiztion does.

Expert capability in IT systems including the Microsoft Office Suite and an ERP system; Specifically Expert capabiliyt in PowerPoint presentations, Excel and Microsoft Project or other similar project/program management applications.
Strong Project management experience
Data Management, synthesis and presentation
A bachelor’s degree along with substantial applied managerial experience in Medical Affairs is required.
A Master’s or other advanced degree is strongly preferred.
Formal education in an IT-related discipline or significant experience in this area is also strongly preferred.
Doctorate is a plus, but is not required.
A minimum of 10 to 15 years of Medical Affairs experience required, with at least five years of strategic project leadership experience preferred.
A minimum of five to seven years of experience working with globally distributed teams across a highly matrixed environment.
Demonstrated executive gravitas (presence, savvy, communication skills, etc) to participate as an equal member on global leadership teams and the perseverance to tirelessly and cheerfully address change leadership.
