Job Description SummaryReporting to the WW Director of Engineering and Process Technology, Diabetes Care (DC), The incumbent plays a key role in the development and execution of manufacturing strategy for the Diabetes Care business. This position is responsible for developing and directing Project Engineering resources in support of new product development (NPD), manufacturing support (sustaining), enterprise cost to win (CTW), and architecture programs.

The Sr. Manager Operations, Project Engineering is responsible for leading a team to ensure the effective management of all project engineering activity within the Diabetes Care Central Engineering Portfolio and harmonizing best practices for project execution. This role holds responsibility in ensuring the effective co-ordination of the major projects inclusive of but not limited to Capital Equipment, GPDS (Global Product Development System) CTW, and Business Continuity in support of DC Operations Strategy.

Job Description

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Management of the CEG project portfolio.

  • Lead the projects function, ensuring it has the skill set, resources and support needed to achieve IIG’s (Individual Impact Goals).

  • Management of the Project Engineering associates, ensuring they have clear IIG’s, Development Plans, and that they operate in a manner consistent with the values of the organization.

  • Escalation of risks and issues arising that threaten project success.

  • Regular communication to leadership on all critical project activity.

  • Ensure all project plans are fully aligned with DC Operations Strategy.

  • Work cross functionally with key stakeholders to ensure appropriate engagement both when gaining support and when executing projects.

  • Provides leadership, develops strategies and implement plans to facilitate rapid product, process, and assembly development and smooth technology transfer to manufacturing sites.

  • Improve and instill best practices into current plants for sound project management

  • Nature of the role requires the ability to influence peers, leaders, and subordinates to provide information and support to initiatives for the good of the overall organization.

  • Work closely with leaders in R&D, Procurement, Quality, Plant Management and the Diabetes Care platform teams.

  • Establish and control department expense and capital budgets to ensure effective accomplishment of goals.

  • Promotes a technical culture that focuses on teamwork and the ability to work across locations as well as departmental and functional lines

  • Comply with all local, state, federal, and BD safety regulations, policies, and procedures including HCRA Hazardous Waste regulations.

  • Comply with all local BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through consistent application of sound quality assurance principles.

  • Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION:

Education:

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, or related Engineering discipline is required.

  • Advanced Degree (MBA, Engineering Management, etc.) Preferred

  • PMI Certification a plus

Experience:

  • The candidate is expected to have a minimum of 10 years relevant experience, showing progressive responsibility in project or process engineering management within medical device R&D and manufacturing roles.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team that will be responsible for all phases of projects (from manufacturing support for product development to implementation in production).

  • Demonstrated experience with leading multiple projects at once with competing priorities.

  • Demonstrated experience in the specifying, selection, development, installation and running of high volume production cells which include (molding, extrusion, assembly, packaging).

  • Demonstrated outstanding knowledge in the fields of automation engineering and process automation.

  • Manufacturing plant experience with a process and equipment related background desirable.

  • Experience in Six Sigma (DFSS or DMAIC) is required.

  • BD operational experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Organizational :

  • The incumbent has working knowledge of Drug and Medical Device GMP regulations and ERP systems and processes.

  • The incumbent has working knowledge of methods and procedures used in the manufacture and quality control of Class 3 medical diagnostic products.

  • The incumbent must be highly motivated with good organizational and analytical/technical problem solving skills.

  • The incumbent must be a self-starter with capability of working under minimal supervision.

  • The incumbent has effective written and oral communication skills; capable in communicating to multiple audiences, and senior management personnel.

  • The incumbent has meaningful experience with and strong capability to work well in a team based environment and promote teamwork.

  • The incumbent has effective organization, project management and planning skills.

  • The incumbent has very strong and effective interpersonal skills with the ability to develop others.

Technical :

  • The incumbent must have new product and process development experience.

  • Experience in managing 3rd party vendors, suppliers and technical development processes desirable.

  • Experience in writing equipment specifications, operating procedures, and managing design efforts of equipment vendors desirable.

  • Experience in the specification and design of automated manufacturing equipment for use within a regulated industry desirable.

  • Experience in developing and executing acceptance test and validation testing protocols desirable.

  • Experience in specification and process design for new products within a regulated industry desirable.

  • The incumbent has experience with capital budgets and project timelines across multifunctional disciplines.

Functional :

  • The incumbent has computer skills in Microsoft Office, Project, Visio, Minitab, SAP and QDMS.
