Reporting to the Associate Director of Operational Technology for BD Interventional, the Staff Engineer Operational Technology (OT) will be responsible for creating and implementing software solutions to deliver, maintain and improve Operational Performance in manufacturing facilities. They will execute the Operational Technology Project Plans, providing leadership and support to local teams in during project implementations.
Additionally, the OT Staff Engineer will be a cross functional team member in a large matrix organization who will be the BDI OT Cybersecurity Program Leader. This will include supporting OT COE activities across all BDI Manufacturing sites including OT Cybersecurity adoption activities, EOL Hardware identification, Software URS and Validation Support, and development of OT SOPs.
BDI Operational Technology initiatives will translate into measurable improvements in overall efficiency for metrics associated with Plant Operational Performance such as improved Service, Safety, Quality, and Cost.
Major responsibilities
Acts as technical resource to BDI manufacturing plants to deliver software solutions to resolve manufacturing issues and improve operational performance
Provides oversight to BDI OT COE Cybersecurity Adoption Activities across all BDI sites
Understands and applies SDLC principles to enterprise application development, desktop, mobile, web app development for manufacturing applications using off the shelf platforms.
Understands or has knowledge of Operational technologies such as ML/AI, IoT Gateways and Device management, MQTT, TCP/IP/IoT Devices, OPC-UA communication standards, XML and MTConnect, industrial networks, Edge Devices, Cloud Connectivity, and Data Analytics
Actively collaborates as a team member in a high-performance cross functional work team environment, including plant and regional manufacturing technical resources, engineering, IT, Quality and regulatory
Acts as a leader to support and drive OT Software Standards adoption and implementation across the manufacturing enterprise
Essential Duties (other duties as assigned)
Assist engineering team in developing User Requirements Specification (URS) documentation specifying OT/IT requirements for new software and equipment purchases
Provide first class technical support to the manufacturing enterprise, supporting plant operations and personnel to ensure a safety-first environment that delivers value to our enterprise and the highest quality products to our customers
Understands and has experience in manufacturing processes in industrial plants, electrical control systems, equipment and machinery including verification and validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) requirements, experience not required, but preference will be given to candidates with manufacturing experience in the Medical Device Manufacturing industry.
Develops, plans, and executes technical solutions including software requirements, scope of work, estimates, participate in proposal review and provide timely status updates
Provide leadership in knowledge transfer and implementation of approved standards and practices for OT system software, desktop, mobile, and web application development for Digital Manufacturing, Manufacturing Controls Applications, custom web-based HMIs, Robotics software
Facilitate and support new technology assessment, Proof of Concepts, Pilots, and Expansion Plans collaborating with Engineering, IT, Information Security, Operations, R&D and Vendors
Provide production support and maintenance for enterprise systems including electronic Device History Record software, OEE and Plant Key Performance Metrics, Process Controls and Automation, reporting and analytics systems for Operations, Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) and others as directed
Collaborate with Information Technology and Information Security teams to achieve desired project outcome for the sites and the overall program
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of software engineering best practices for SDLC and Change Control Management
Ability to write scripts in one modern programming language such as Python, Java, SQL, APIs
Familiar with Azure, cloud development, back-end configuration and UI/UX No-Code Environments
Track record of strong people/team development
Ability to establish and maintain strong, effective team relationships with multiple organizational levels across manufacturing sites and corporate
Strong written and verbal communication, including documentation standards, adept at articulating priorities, and speak to stakeholders at all levels in the organization.
Candidates must be willing to travel up to 30% to support software development and cybersecurity activities as needed for multiple sites in the Northeast Region of the U.S.

Required Education
- Bachelors degree in any of the following areas of engineering: Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical engineering, Computer Science, Network Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or any other equivalent degree provided with the required experience
Required Experience
Minimum of 5 years of experience in manufacturing system software use or integration, managing manufacturing process control applications projects, supporting, and developing software and hardware solutions, assets, and databases
Minimum of 5 years of experience in software validation
Minimum of 5 years of experience in scripting data automation solutions for enterprise software solutions
Preferred Experience
General knowledge on OT and IT infrastructure for manufacturing operations
Experience working with third party vendors and system integrators, specifying software requirements for OT software development projects, Factory and Site acceptance tests, and project management
Knowledge of cybersecurity controls and its applicability in the healthcare industry, manufacturing, medical devices
Knowledge of manufacturing quality systems and validation in Medical device, Pharma or other regulated industry
