Job Description Summary
Reporting directly to BD’s Chief Technology Officer, and as a member of the company’s R&D Leadership Team, the SVP & Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) will investigate and identify new technologies that align to BD’s growth strategy, helping to secure external assets and access to new technologies and oversee the integration of these assets into BD’s product pipeline. S/he will drive improvement and expansion of BD’s current innovation levels as well as digitalization competencies and expertise. The incumbent will define and implement front-end innovation systems, in conjunction with the CTO and R&D leadership team, that increase the success rate and revenue potential of projects in the BD innovation funnel and ultimately deliver the best customer outcomes and impact for our investment.
Reporting directly to BD’s Chief Technology Officer, and as a member of the company’s R&D Leadership Team, the SVP & Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) will:
Partner with BD’s business unit (BU) leaders and BD’s external scientific advisory board (SAB) to develop a science and technology innovation strategy aligned with BD’s growth strategy.
Represent BD externally, communicating the BD innovation strategy, identifying new technologies and working with business development leaders to secure access to key technology assets.
Oversee the development of new innovation models, including partnerships and investments, with a focus on cross-BU and white space opportunities.
Drive capability building for internal talent and external partnership in support of the BD innovation strategy, with a focus on digital technology expertise.
In partnership with the CTO and the R&D leadership Team, s/he will champion the front end innovation system across BD, partnering with BU innovation teams to increase the velocity and value creation of the innovation funnel and ultimately deliver the best customer outcomes and impact for our investment.
Primary RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to)
This key leader will help set company research and scientific priorities so that they align with BD’s overall mission and key driver goals.
In partnership with the CTO, the CSO will lead the selection of the external SAB members and manage the SAB by setting priorities, facilitating meetings and driving the SAB recommendations into BD’s innovation strategy and execution plans.
The CSO will be an industry expert and liaise with stakeholders internal and external to the business to drive related organizational capabilities, products, and technology-enabled services with the goal of maintaining and enhancing BD’s competitive position and profitability and adding value to our customers and shareholders.
The incumbent will stay updated on technological advances and industry trends, which allows them to advise the organization's Executive Leadership Team and Board of Directors in scientific matters. This may include making recommendations on future projects, such as new research opportunities or technological ventures.
Represents the scientific goals and interests of BD at select regulatory meetings, press conferences, analyst meetings, company meetings, conventions and shareholder events.
The CSO will partner with the CTO and RDLT to shape and deliver the company’s basic and applied research programs, as well as development of new innovation models, technologies and products, particularly for cross-BU and white space opportunities.
This position combines discipline-specific knowledge with leadership and business skills to promote the efficiency, profitability and competitive position of BD.
S/He partners with the CTO and RDLT to envision and support the development of research capabilities (human, methodological, and technological) required to demonstrate feasibility and value of research programs,
Communicate BD’s scientific capabilities and product offerings with the both the scientific and BD’s customer communities
Provide inspirational leadership and well-defined scientific strategies to the company and help foster a high achieving and collaborative culture of innovation.
Collaborate extensively with the company’s senior leadership and Board of Directors.
An MD or Ph.D. level scientist with a minimum of 12 years of industry experience in medical devices. Life sciences, diagnostics or related additional industry or academic experience is desirable.
The ideal candidate will have a strong desire to be the creative lead in the development and application of new technologies and research.
Extensive industry, research and management experience is required.
Candidate should also have significant experience with research and publication. Grant writing and fundraising experience is desirable.
A combination of excellent science and business know-how, as well as the ability to align company functions with the scientific and innovation mission and vision.
Global experience preferred along with a track record of driving growth.
A recognized leader within the market with a strong establish network.
Ability to communicate effectively with both internal colleagues and external scientists.
Demonstrated track record of working and achieving results collaboratively, in support of business strategies and across organizational boundaries.
Significant experience in relevant intensive R&D environments, with evidence of increasing levels of responsibility.
Experience in scientific leadership roles focused on the discovery, development, and/or manufacture of new technologies.
Knowledge of leading commercial medical device/life sciences companies and their business models,
Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as outstanding problem-solving, organization and presentation skills.
Ability to build and run effective scientific teams and implement sound technology validation protocols that demonstrate the feasibility and value of the technology.
Define and champion to industry the company’s foundational scientific value proposition(s).
Must have a successful track record of leading multiple innovative efforts.
Ability to manage diverse and simultaneous projects of various complexity; Ability to solve complex challenges.
Strategic thinker able to take on innovative risk while balancing the need to meet timelines.
Medical Device industry experience interfacing with regulatory bodies including the FDA; Experience in Class III medical devices is strongly preferred.
Strong sense of urgency and a desire to roll up his/her sleeves to do the work.
Thorough understanding of all stages of product development and market introduction.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
Proven ability to build, manage and lead with or without direct authority.
Exceptional change management skills.
Able to translate broad corporate strategies into clear, specific objectives and plans. for
Proven success developing and fostering a culture of innovation.
