The Vice President, R&D for Medication Delivery Solutions serves as a critical member of the executive team for the $3.6 Billion Medication Delivery Solutions Business Unit within BD. The leadership of the business unit aims to lead and advance medication delivery in Vascular Access Management. The incumbent reports directly to the Senior Vice President, R&D – BD Medical Segment and the President, Medication Delivery Solutions Business Unit.

The successful candidate will have the ability to lead a large, multifaceted R&D organization and collaborate closely with his/her commercial and cross-functional colleagues to develop new innovative products that continue to solidify the business unit’s leading position, and also lead the company into adjacent areas which will enable the company to serve their customers in a broader manner. We are seeking a special individual who has the ability to also articulate a compelling overarching vision that is inspirational to the overall R&D team and is rooted in improving the lives of patients around the world. This leader needs to be very hands on when required, but also has the skills required to evaluate and develop strong leaders on his or her team with capabilities that align to the strategy. This leader must also have experience with large external co-development programs and understand best practices in how to ensure success with these types of collaborative development efforts.

Specifically, the incumbent should have experience in 3 areas that are core to the business unit;

Healthcare IT space, with specific expertise in the healthcare delivery space (pharmacy, acute care) strongly preferred. Must have successfully developed and launched integrated products for Healthcare Information Technology, with a demonstrated understanding and application of cloud-based technologies. Developing complex electro-mechanical medical device systems with infusion pump experience being highly desired. Developing disposable devices (infusion sets) for infusion pumps.

The Vice President, R&D is expected to work closely with executives leading other functional departments to develop and execute well-reasoned, comprehensive plans. This role will be responsible to meet effectively the Company’s objectives for product development, as well as those targeted for licensing and/or acquisition. He/she must understand the “white space” and make appropriate strategy recommendations for the business/product portfolio. The candidate should be able to drive to the innovation agenda from a technical perspective for the business unit. The successful candidate must be capable of assuming leadership of a large, distributed R&D team, directing it to reach progressive milestones in a cost effective and timely manner.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS

Reports To: Senior Vice President, R&D – BD Medical Segment and the President, Medication Delivery Solutions Business Unit

Direct Reports: Senior R&D Leadership for Vascular Access Devices, Catheter Care and Medication Delivery, and Infusion Specialty Disposables. Total organization is >700 associates.

Other Key Relationships: The executive leadership team for the MDS Business Unit includes the VP/GM Vascular Access Devices, VP/GM Catheter Care and Medication Delivery, VP/GM Infusion Specialty Disposables and other key MDS Regional and Functional Business Unit leaders. This position is a highly visible with customers and must have the executive presence to instill confidence within the C-suite of our customer base.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Vice President, R&D, MDS will:

  • Provide the technical leadership that designs, develops, verifies and validates new products/technologies appropriate for the market and manufacturing. Collaborate closely with all functional areas necessary to aggressively advance products from proof-of-concept through development, validation, product launch and support.

  • Manage the R&D portfolio process for the business unit. This includes Product and Technology Development for the entire portfolio and the full product lifecycle, managing the R&D investment, facilitating prioritization of the full portfolio, and developing a strategy for partnerships to optimize product development. Must develop, communicate, and drive delivery of an engaging product, technology, and innovation roadmap that delivers on the marketing vision.

  • Develop and drive talent management strategy for R&D. Lead talent management of the R&D organization, including coaching Core Team Leaders to develop them as business leaders. Attract and retain the very highest caliber of R&D engineers. Develop talent requirements and assume responsibility for planning, recruiting, training and motivating team members.

  • Champion for practical application of the Global Product Development System (GPDS) and improve the process for maximum effectiveness. Drive execution of product development activities that are cross-functional and multi-site. Instill discipline and process to the product development effort in order to provide timely completion of milestones, remain within budget, and foster innovation and teamwork throughout the company.

  • Work with relevant counterparts and direct reports to effectively identify new Intellectual Property (“IP”) initiatives and translate those into new products and/or procedures. Contribute to the development, implementation and protection of IP strategy across the product portfolio, proposing responses to disruptive technologies or competitive threats that impact the Company’s business.

  • Ensure product development aligns to support customer environment needs and that evolving customer needs and strategies are understood and accounted for in product and technical roadmaps.

  • Partner with Medical Affairs, Business Development, Innovation Teams, and Strategic Marketing to assess new technologies and other strategic opportunities, especially those “outside the home court” and aligned to market trends and customer needs.

  • Partner with Quality and Operations to transfer product development requirements to production.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION & PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

The successful candidate will have a proven record of product development and leadership in the healthcare IT industry (HIT, HIS, RIS, PACS, etc.) with a minimum of 15 years of experience and at least 5 of those at a senior level leading a large team with a complex product portfolio. He/She should be comfortable with the execution of all aspects of product development including design, development, verification and validation and other issues relevant to the final commercialized product. Experience transforming another robust product line through significant software platform changes is ideal.

The candidate must have solid R&D experience in software and systems engineering, employing modern, lean product development methodologies across large multi-disciplinary teams.

The candidate will have a reputation and record of effective collaboration with peers, subordinates and superiors as well as outside advisors and customers. He/She should also have a demonstrable history of actively partnering with the clinical community to capture and develop new product ideas, as well as to help understand and communicate key technological advancements. The candidate will have earned an undergraduate degree, preferably in engineering. An advanced degree will be advantageous.

The candidate must be an effective team builder, able to bring out the best in people through both coaching and by example; he/she must cultivate R&D leaders at the next level who can do the same. He/She must be an excellent communicator who radiates compassion, integrity and loyalty to BD and respective customers, employees and shareholders.

The candidate will have a BS Degree in Engineering; MS or Doctoral degree highly preferred, with an MBA desirable.
