Job Description SummaryReporting to the Senior Manager of Operations, the Staff Engineer is responsible for leading the development and implementation manufacturing process technologies for BD products primarily within Diabetes Care (DC) and Pre-Analytical Systems (PAS) section of the device cluster. The candidate should have a strong background in Controls Engineering, driving engineering change and implementing best practice on high speed assembly lines. The individual should also have a good background in project management leadership. He/She will work closely with R&D, Quality and manufacturing locations to implement these manufacturing technologies.

Job Description

Knowledge & Problem Solving

  • Provides theoretical and hands-on electrical and controls engineering direction and leadership to the production departments to identify problems and pursue plans toward their resolution. Directs the efforts of and aides in the development of other technical associates in resolving production issues.

  • Leads projects through the development, programming, and design of varied and complex portions of new production lines. Scope includes but is not limited to electrical installation, controls system design, controls system testing and programming of HMI’s/PLC’s, vision inspection systems, Robotic cells, Servo & Stepper Motor Control Systems, various drive and other miscellaneous electrical systems.

  • Demonstrates complete understanding of a wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in a manufacturing process technology. Has general knowledge of other process technologies. Provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, and practical.

  • Provides technical contribution to the completion of specific programs and projects. Failure to achieve results or erroneous decisions would result in serious program delays.

Discretion / Latitude

  • Work is performed without appreciable direction. The individual will exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment.

Liaison

  • Represents the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects. Interacts with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.

Project Management

  • Alongside technical leadership the individual should be able to demonstrate the ability to effectively manage technical projects. From stakeholder management, cross-functional leadership, risk identification to successful project closure.

Manufacturing Process Technology

  • Leads development of high volume production processes (e.g. molding, assembly and packaging), including pilot production, process feasibility, optimization and validation.

  • Leads the purchase of production equipment. Develops the specifications and acceptance protocols.

  • Leads the management of vendors in the design, development and implementation of manufacturing equipment.

  • Leads the application of six-sigma and lean manufacturing methodologies in projects to optimize manufacturing equipment.

  • Develops processes by designing and/or performing experimental testing, data analysis, preparation of reports, and providing recommendations.

  • Leads project technical strategy.

  • Applies BD-standardized manufacturing technologies

  • Supports the manufacturing plants in cost reduction, standardization and equipment upgrade projects.

  • Provides input into department strategy.

Cross Functional Collaboration

  • Works with product design and development teams to ensure robust manufacturability of new products and to estimate capital and product costs.

  • Works with diverse functions and manufacturing sites to achieve project goals.

  • Collaborates with teams of engineers and technicians and coordinate resources to achieve project and business goals.

Other Responsibilities

  • Provides status reports to management in a timely basis.

  • Follows division policies and guidelines.

EDUCATION

Required:

  • Bachelor of Engineering/Science.

EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Minimum of 8 years relevant experience or a combination of equivalent education and experience in development of high-speed automated manufacturing equipment, with at least 4 years of this experience in the high volume production of medical devices, in-vitro diagnostic products, and pharmaceutical products.

  • Experience developing and implementing process improvements and launching new equipment into a manufacturing environment.

  • Ability to lead all phases of projects; brainstorming, scoping, budgeting, writing specifications, quoting, capital proposals, vendor management, coordinating installations, running validations.

  • Must have the ability to manage concurrent priorities.

  • Must possess good attention to detail and flexibility of approach.

  • Must work well as part of a team

  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to meet strict deadlines

  • Introduction of new products/ technical transfers

  • To be computer literate to include (but not limited to) all aspects of MS Office, MS Project and Autocad. Minitab experience an advantage.

  • Good telephone, oral and written communication skills.
