Maintenance Manager will have departmental leadership responsibility for planning, coordinating, and managing technical initiatives. Responsible for the sustained maintenance, operation, engineering and technology aspects of manufacturing equipment and processes required to meet the department’s safety, quality, efficiency, production volume and cost objectives. Reports directly to the Senior Engineering Manager to support maintenance and operation of manufacturing systems and automation equipment to meet goals of the plant and business.

Essential Functions :

  • Participates or responsible for the specification, design, prototyping, procurement, installation, start-up, integration, validation, optimization and follow-up maintenance for existing and new manufacturing equipment and processes in a manufacturing plant.

  • Leads maintenance staff including selection and mentoring of high caliber technical maintenance professionals with required skills and abilities.

  • Assesses resource skill requirements, manpower loading, priorities and time allocation for projects within a manufacturing department.

  • Sources new technology to meet new product and manufacturing objectives. Drives robustness evaluation and development for new manufacturing and technology processes.

  • Establishes and drives effective project engineering management practices to plan and execute projects. Uses a structured engineering development process.

  • Coaches team members in successful integration of structured development processes, engineering and risk management methods to insure a project's technical and business success.

  • Maintains active involvement in all major projects for the manufacturing department. Coaches team members through implementation of design or process elements that require new technologies. Capable of taking on and completing significant projects as well as overseeing the work of team.

  • Must be familiar with GMP's, ISO requirements, the IVD Directive, the CE Mark, Six Sigma and LEAN principles. Should have a working knowledge of validation of manufacturing processes within the IVD or pharmaceutical industries. Using BD's validation methodology, works with QMRC to plan and validate process and equipment changes or start-up.

  • Carries out HR management responsibilities including hiring, terminations, job assignments, reassignments, performance management, training, professional development of staff, etc. Familiar with

  • evaluation and hiring of consultants and technical contractors when appropriate and required.

  • Carries out all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • Manage and lead design modifications and improvements of production machinery and equipment to improve safety, quality, reliability, and cost.

  • Designs, recommends, and implements cost reduction projects within the scope of annual plant targeted goals.

  • Troubleshoot and solve technical problems pertaining to production machinery, equipment, and processes.

  • Responsible for Preventive Maintenance compliance, effectiveness, and Spare Parts availability.

  • Responsible for creating and meeting maintenance budget

  • Maintains a 3-to-5-year vision for capital planning and a reaction strategy for addressing ongoing obsolescence management.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Possesses solid, broad knowledge base of engineering fundamentals as applied to manufacturing equipment and processes with strong technical, analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Good working knowledge of electromechanical and software controlled manufacturing processes. Familiarity with manufacturing of chemical and biological media components is preferred. Must be familiar with multiple manufacturing technologies to provide technical guidance to plant and staff for the key core technologies used by a specific plant. Examples are: surface treatment, material feeding/transport, liquid filling, capping/closing, drying, primary and secondary packaging.

  • Must have a broad maintenance management experience base covering electrical, software, mechanical, chemical, packaging, validation, and maintenance engineering.

  • Must have a track record of developing or maintaining a skilled, effective and proactive manufacturing maintenance team aligned with business and organizational objectives and capable of delivering products and/or processes as required to meet the business objectives.

  • Must have demonstrated the ability to select, motivate, develop, and manage multi-disciplined maintenance personnel.

  • Must be knowledgeable of effective management practices for technical professionals and projects

  • Must be capable of selecting and implementing contractor/consultants to augment the departmental resource pool when necessary to provide skills/capabilities to accomplish goals.

  • Broad knowledge of high-performance manufacturing, FDA regulatory requirements, validation concepts and techniques, standard cost accounting preferred.

  • Experience with factory automation equipment design, operation, and maintenance, preferably in a GMP regulated manufacturing environment.

Required Education and Experience:

  • BS degree in Engineering

  • 10+ years hands-on relevant engineering experience

  • 4+ years of experience in an operations or manufacturing environment

  • 3+ years engineering management experience
