Reporting to the Sr. Manager, Molding, the Sr. Molding Engineer is responsible for developing and implementing manufacturing process technologies for BD MMP products. Primary activity includes applying Injection Molding experience and training to implement Quality improvements, Capacity expansion and Cost Reduction Projects. Works closely with R&D, Quality and manufacturing locations to implement these manufacturing technologies.

Knowledge & Problem Solving:

  • Define requirements for injection molding processes and automation, from concept evaluation through commercialization. This requires creating molding specific documents/procedures.

  • Develop specifications for part design (DFM), molding machine settings, operating procedures, acceptance and validation test plans and protocols.

  • Provide technology input to guide product development and design for manufacturability.

  • Cooperatively advises and directs activities of vendors and internal cross functional team members to accomplish project objectives.

  • Demonstrates complete understanding of a wide application of technical principles, theories and concepts in a manufacturing process technology. Has general knowledge of other process technologies. Provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, and practical.

Liaison:

  • Communicate, coordinate and execute tool design and injection molding process development activities including tooling validation into external vendor locations.

  • Works with cross functional team to investigate & implement solutions to major manufacturing issues.

Project Management:

  • Must be able to develop and execute validations protocols (IQ, OQ, PQ), engineering studies and design of experiments.

  • Successfully manages projects to from design, prototype, and build through commercial launch. Required to initiate, plan, execute, monitor, control, and close these projects efficiently.

  • Needs to be able to lead cross functional Teams, inclusive of external molding suppliers, to successfully define, build and validate mold build programs

  • Process Technology

  • Develops specifications and acceptance protocols to purchase production injection molds.

  • Manages vendors in the design, development and implementation of injection molds.

  • Applies six-sigma and lean manufacturing methodologies to optimize injection molding processes.

  • Develops processes by designing and/or performing experimental testing, data analysis, preparation of reports, and providing recommendations.

  • Provides input into project technical strategy.

  • Working knowledge of scientific molding principals and experience with industrial application of such.

  • Applies BD-standardized manufacturing technologies.

Cross Functional Collaboration:

  • Works with Quality, R&D, Procurement and Product Support members to ensure successful implementation of projects.

  • Works with diverse functions and manufacturing sites to achieve project goals.

  • Collaborates with teams of engineers and technicians and coordinate resources to achieve project and business goals.

  • Provide automation technical support to Project/Process Engineers if applicable, in investigations such as: Corrective and Preventive Actions, Customer Complaints and Quality Notification.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Plastics Molding (PREFERRED) or equivalent work experience.

Experience:

  • Prefer a minimum of 4 years relevant experience in a commercial molding environment.

Preferred:

  • High volume manufacturing

  • Medical device, in-vitro diagnostic products, or pharmaceutical products

  • RJG Master Molder training/certification

  • Six Sigma certification

  • Experience with Mold Filling Simulation Software

  • Solidworks/CAD

  • GD&T training/experience.
