Basic Job Purpose:

Leads the strategic and tactical aspects of Project and Process Engineering and Equipment and Buildings Maintenance at BD Diagnostics Systems in North Carolina. Responsibilities include collaboration with all functions to support the achievement of Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost goals; complying with all applicable regulatory codes and norms; managing and executive capital budgets; and providing leadership and strategic direction to plant automation strategy. Leads the design, planning, construction/installation and maintenance of buildings and equipment. Oversees the management of required facilities related contracts including the development and implementation of maintenance strategies aligned with Lean and TPM best practices. Develops and coaches a team of Engineers, Project Manager, Facilities Manager and Maintenance Technicians.

The Engineering Manager will develop a solution oriented team, challenge the status quo, develop and share a sound strategy to hit their commitments, and relentlessly seek for continuous improvement. The Manager will effectively communicate across all BDDS functions, and will align within the business processes across DS Engineering and Facilities Managers, and BD Corporate as a whole.

Main Accountabilities:

Leads the development of a strong team of Engineers, Project Leaders and Maintenance Technicians. Develop succession pipeline Aligns closely with other departments to ensure that capital projects related to infrastructure and process equipment are appropriately scoped and resourced from an engineering and project management standpoint, prepare justification for those projects, and execute them per plan from a cost and schedule standpoint. Works from a strategic perspective with business leadership to help assess and design best future facility strategies to support the ongoing business plan.

Aligns functionally with Diagnostic Systems Engineering and Facilities functions to leverage resources and business processes across DS. Develops and maintains a master Project list for capital projects. Works closely with site CI, Production, Quality, Materials and Product Support Managers to ensure that the deadlines for project deliverables are met in the most productive and efficient manner. Ensures alignment of engineering resources needed to meet and exceed plant Continuous Improvement (CI) targets. Partners with the Production and Quality Leads to maximize plant-wide operating efficiency and equipment reliability.

Leads engineering efforts to identify and implement process optimization initiatives. Owns the ongoing long-term facility plan; works with leadership and other key stakeholders to ensure that the North Carolina operations have a living, specific and proactive plan for space use (and, when necessary, expansion) that supports hiring and other ongoing business needs. Leads the development of emergency situation back up planning as it pertains to the facility, key laboratories, and production (building damage, production area damage, pandemics etc). Has good knowledge and understanding of Lean and TPM and actively participates within the Lean/CI function to continually assess and if necessary change the facility layout inclusive of manufacturing cells, warehousing, offices, and labs.

Participates in the Sales and Operations Planning process in order to stay ahead of facility and process changes and improvements required to ensure ongoing product supply. Annually prepares a departmental budget, which will include both capital and expense items. Once approved, monitors ongoing spending against budget to identify significant variances and pursue their root cause. As requested and appropriate, prepares quarterly projections so that the ongoing budget truly reflects anticipated spending. Complies with all other local, state, federal, and BD regulations, policies, and procedures.

Supervisory Responsibility :

This position will be responsible for supervising an organization which include Process and Project engineers, Facilities Managers, Project Managers and Maintenance Technicians.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related technical field

  • Minimum of 7 years experience in Engineering or Facilities management at manufacturing locations

  • Minimum of 5 years managing cross-functional projects

  • Minimum of 3 years Engineering or Facilities experience in a regulated (e.g. FDA, ISO, FAA, or NRC) environment

  • OSHA education and application

  • Demonstrated leadership and track record of achieving results through the development and execution of strategies and plans

  • Proven negotiation skills with external partners and business contacts

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Ability to multitask and provide results in a timely manner

  • Proven track record of developing (IQ/OQ/PQ) validation protocols, reports, performing engineering studies and validation runs. Experience with statistical applications.

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree in a technical field or business

  • Experience managing multiple facilities

  • Experience with Lean, 6-Sigma and TPM implementation
