Job Description

The incumbent shall provide a leading tooling role in planning and execution of medical device projects for the BOC facilities. Must provide molded plastic part design expertise and serve as tooling subject matter expert (SME) for cross functional team; leading areas such as plastic part design for mold-ability, tool design and robustness and process development starting from concept through commercial realization. In this capacity, the incumbent must be capable of specifying mold equipment and its supporting equipment, maintain timelines and associated project budgets and actively de-risk all aspects for the molding development. Develop and maintain uniform processes for mold PMs and mold condition & replacement program. This role will require regular updates to managers (technical and functional), cross-function teams(s) and BOC Operational leadership. This position will require 25% travel that can be unevenly distributed throughout the year and can exceed 25% when business requirements are needed.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide molding expertise in plastic components, design for manufacturability /mold-ability, design for improved / best in class tooling and scientific molding principles.

  • Communicates, strategizes, leads and executes all molding and tooling activities; this includes but is not limited to tool concepts, tooling RFQ and vendor selection, tool design reviews, factory acceptance, site acceptance, process develop and validation of designated tooling.

  • Actively participates on New Product Development (NPD) core teams as required

  • Works both independently and/or collectively to develop project plans and execution of prioritizing and scheduling assignments to meet business goals.

  • Able to train, mentor and counsel team members in the area of proper tool manufacturability.

  • Creates, develops, and maintains relationships with vendors to posture BD to save time, money and risk to the business.

  • Regularly interfaces with various R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, procurement, etc. functions to establish collaborative and reciprocal relationships to identify molding improvement and new product opportunities.

  • Seeks, evaluates and proposes technology and new tooling technology strategy to leverage for development

  • Coordinate standardization of mold PM initiative / programs for the BOC plants.

  • Executes other duties assigned by manager.

Basic Qualifications Required:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish), with good communication skills, oral and written.

  • Ability to work with all levels of the organization.

  • Teamwork oriented.

  • Ability to interpret, edit and correct part drawings, solid models and molding simulations.

  • 3D Cad software knowledge - Solidworks Preferred

  • Understanding of GD&T per Y14.5

  • Strong understanding of project management and budgeting

  • Ability to specify specific tool steels to optimize tool life and reduce the TCO of molds.

Education and/ or Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Plastics Engineering or equivalent.

  • 8+ years of relevant injection mold and tooling experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Desirable Qualifications Skills and Knowledge:

  • Six Sigma certification desirable

  • 2 years of experience in medical device / regulated industry desirable
