Program Objective/Scope
The BD Research & Development Summer Internship Program provides the student with an opportunity to partner with peers, senior personnel, and supervisors who provide informal mentoring and coaching. Students will have the opportunity to be exposed to our process of designing and developing technologies and products related to medical and/or interventional devices, in vitro diagnostics, and life science research for different global markets. Selected students may work with cross-functional or interdisciplinary teams and may have multiple internal partners and customers.
Each intern will have an individual project and the opportunity to develop technical engineering and scientific expertise. Through our summer internship, intern students develop an extensive professional network, learn how to work in a scientific and engineering environment, build hands-on laboratory skills, and deliver presentations showcasing their work. The summer internship program is a great opportunity to gain exposure to a fortune 500 biotechnology and medical device company and specifically, BD’s culture.
We are recruiting for a highly driven engineering/science students with a passion for technology and product development. The candidate is responsible for all relocation, housing, and transportation costs.
Project Area:
The intern will work as a member of a team that is involved in identifying, developing, and testing new technologies for a range of interventional medical devices used in surgery. Specifically, the team is focused on chemical and materials aspects of these devices. Under the supervision of a senior scientist, the intern will help with the development of new chemical formulations (hydrogels, coatings, emulsions etc.) and test methods for characterizing these formulations. This includes chemical modifications of biopolymers, determination of their physico-chemical properties by various analytical instrumentation methods, and assessment of functional performance both in-vitro and in-vivo .
Qualifications:
REQUIRED:
The candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States without limitations and require no sponsorship for visa status now or in the future (e.g. H1-B status)
MS/PhD students pursuing a degree in Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Textile Engineering or other relevant areas
Hands on experience working in a graduate level chemistry/materials science/biomedical lab
Working knowledge of analytical instrumentation techniques used for materials characterization
Proficiency in Microsoft suite of software (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
Ability to work 40 hours per week for duration of the 10 to 12-week summer internship period
PREFERRED:
GPA minimum of 3.0
Previous Internship Experience
MS/PhD Degree: All levels are encouraged to apply
Experience developing polymeric materials for biomedical applications
Understanding of human anatomy especially musculoskeletal system
