Job Description Summary

Job Summary:

BD Technologies and Innovation is an enterprise R&D center located in North Carolina that helps bring high-impact, new-to-world innovations into development. The Senior Engineer will be part of a multi-disciplinary Innovation team supporting a variety of medical technologies and solutions with an initial focus on new drug delivery systems.

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Innovation, this is a technical position where the engineer will contribute significantly to exciting, high visibility projects and collaborations across the BD R&D portfolio. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and executing key project deliverables, which includes generating creative solutions to complex technical problems. An aptitude for technological program management and communication to both internal and external stakeholders is required. A professional background in biotechnology and/or medical device design is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate should have a working knowledge of engineering design, computational modelling, analytical techniques, biology, and human physiology to solve multidisciplinary biomedical problems.

The Senior Engineer must be able to effectively collaborate with team members from varying backgrounds and should have strong oral and written communication skills. The successful candidate will have an interest in technically contributing to areas beyond medical devices and drug delivery systems over time due to the dynamic nature of the Innovation team and its programs.

Job Responsibilities: (Primary Duties, Roles, and/or Authorities)

  • Design and conductimplement scientificstudies (benchtop, ex vivo, and/or in vivo) to characterize the performance and reduce risk of medical technologies, which may include protocol and novel method development.

  • Provide technical direction to advance medical device design including ideation, prototype development, and bench/in vivo evaluations.

  • Conduct data and statistical analysis efforts of experimental results to generate conclusions to drive project directions.

  • Communicate results effectively (oral and written) to key stakeholders of varying technical abilities.

  • Understand customer needs through literature review, technology assessments, and ethnographic research.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members to develop technology solutions and initiate studies that address prioritized unmet needs.

Education and Experience:

  • Degree in engineering (biomedical preferred) or relatedfield is required. Advanced degree is preferred.

  • Experience: PhD, MS + 2 years of relevant industry experience, or BS + 4 years of relevant industry experience is required

  • Experience in application of engineering first principles to design drug delivery device concepts for parenteral applications.

  • Experience in planning and execution of bench and in vivo experiments to evaluate and down-select drug delivery deviceconcepts is preferred.

  • Experience with a range of physical test methodologies (e.g., force, pressure, flow, etc.) and data acquisition is preferred.

  • Experience with data analysis, signal processing, statistics, and technical writing is required.

Knowledge and Skills:

Required:

  • Ability to plan and conduct scientific experiments and effectively analyze, interpret, report, and present experimental results

  • Experience contributing to multidisciplinary teams including the ability to influence without direct reporting ties

  • Ability to translate an issue or problem statement into study strategy

  • Ability to adapt quickly to changes in program and project priorities

  • Strongoral and written communication skillsand team collaboration

Preferred skills:

  • Programming (e.g., Python, Matlab) and/or graphical design (e.g., SolidWorks or other equivalent 3D modeling)

  • Experience working under a quality system

  • Knowledge of statistics and use of statistical packages for analyzing datasets

  • Knowledge of drug delivery systems and/ormedical device development

  • Research experience with in vivo animal models to de-risk technology solutions

  • Image processing and analysis
