Job Description Summary
The CAE Staff Engineer is an essential part of BD’s Corporate Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) Advanced Prototyping team and will have the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of BD’s next generation medical products and enhance the current product portfolio. Under the general direction of the Corporate CAE Advanced Prototyping Manager, they will utilize a wide range of additive & subtractive tools and equipment to optimize the concept, prototypes, and rapid tooling capabilities to aid in the product development process.
The CAE Staff Engineer in Advanced Prototyping will provide technical leadership in the application, research, and development of new processes and equipment for the purposes of producing molded parts that fall into the following areas: real material functional prototypes, low volume manufacturing, manufacturing fixtures, replacement parts and medical components for clinical trial use. Additionally, they will provide mentorship and technical guidance to other team members in subject matter areas of expertise. The direct impact of these efforts will be to deliver high quality medical parts to the BDX community a through the use of additive manufacturing, subtractive techniques & injection molding.
Provide technical leadership for the application and development of CAE Rapid Tooling capabilities within the BDX R&D community. Recommend and implement the application of appropriate technologies to meet project objectives. Interact independently with product development teams to examine options and develop plans for optimizing part functionality. Plan and manage multiple rapid tooling/injection molding projects utilizing internal and external partners to ensure successful completion. Maintain knowledge of internal and external capabilities to assist with project direction definition.
Lead the research and development of Subtractive manufacturing techniques (and Advanced Additive technologies where appropriate) required for advancing the state-of-the-art advanced prototyping and rapid tooling tools/equipment. Coordinate efforts with outside partners and internal stakeholders. Recommend acquisition and/or development of additional tools, software and equipment.
Work closely with the CAE Manufacturing Technology group and network on active projects. Provide tooling expertise to enhance the impact of injection molding simulations. Utilize the simulation team to drive prototype tool design for quality molded parts. Where applicable, explore opportunities to make impact with additive manufacturing technologies through project connections.
Develop and maintain an external network of machining, tooling, additive, and molding vendors that support BD rapid tooling projects. Maintain state-of-the-art CAE Rapid Tooling, additive and subtractive capabilities through training courses, seminars, and industry conferences. Attend and present at worldwide industry conferences to reinforce role as a subject matter expert.
Promote the value of CAE Rapid Tooling & Advanced Prototyping capabilities and engineering applications to the BDX community through internal webinars, forums, and visits to business unit customers.
Utilize and/or identify necessary software packages such as NetFabb, SolidWorks, Creo, etc., to enhance/optimize the production process in areas of quality, accuracy, throughput, and utilization.
Develop and maintain an environment for constructive inter-relationships among CAE team members, with business unit customers and among various cross-functional disciplines.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum Required Experience:
Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
Minimum of 7 years ( required) of experience in utilizing a variety of tooling/injection molding techniques within the product development arena, preferably with some experience within the medical product industry.
Minimum of 5 years of Project Management experience required.
Familiarity with the use of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and other methods of part inspection to maintain process accuracy.
Strong experience in using three-dimensional CAD solid modeling software packages required (preferably SolidWorks).
Proficient in injection mold design.
Proven ability to work with engineering professionals at all levels and to communicate with others effectively.
Must be able to lift 40lbs.
Advanced degree (MS or PhD) preferred.
Experience in utilizing a variety of additive manufacturing techniques preferred.
Familiarity with working in and setting up cleanroom capabilities is preferred.
