BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) Staff Scientist, Chemistry (Hybrid) in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina

Job Description Summary

The Staff Scientist will be part of a multi-disciplinary Innovation team supporting a variety of medical technologies and solutions with an initial focus on the development of surgical and interventional medical devices. Reporting to a Senior Manager of Innovation, this is a technical position where the scientist will contribute significantly to exciting, high visibility projects and collaborations across the R&D portfolio. This position will be responsible for the assessment, development, and testing of new technologies for a range of medical devices, including drug-device combination products.

The candidate is expected to design and execute experiments aimed at developing new chemical formulations and/or biomaterials (hydrogels, coatings, resorbable polymers, viscoelastic materials etc.), and test methods for characterizing them. Examples include designing formulations for enabling controlled release of drugs/proteins and improving our understanding of the biomaterial-tissue interactions impacting the performance of medical devices. Specific expertise sought is in the areas of formulation development using soft matter (polymers, colloids, etc.), materials structure-property elucidation, controlled delivery of drugs or proteins and tissue permeation enhancers. Additional duties involve characterization of formulations using analytical instrumentation and assessment of functional performance both in-vitro and in-vivo.

The Scientist must be able to effectively collaborate with team members from varying backgrounds and should have strong oral and written communication skills. The successful candidate will have an interest in technically contributing to areas beyond medical devices and drug delivery systems over time due to the dynamic nature of the Innovation team and its programs.
