Reports to the Director of Toxicology, BD CPDT. Responsible for the management of all laboratory animal personnel and is responsible for the procurement, maintenance, issuance and monitoring of the facility’s experimental animals. Ensures that all animals are being treated humanely and in accordance with the Guide for the Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Under the direction of the consulting veterinarian, serves as advisor as it relates to animal diseases, physiology, behavior and breeding. Serves as the secretary/coordinator to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Serves as back-up lead contact for all inspections dealing with the research animal facility, including: USDA, FDA, AAALAC, IACUC, and QA. Ensures that primary investigators are strictly following all aspects of approved IACUC protocols.

Vivarium Management

  • Responsible for the technical management of the Research Animal Facilities.

  • Responsible for preparation and revision of, and adherence to, Standard Operating Procedures relevant to operations within the Research Animal Facility consistent with Good Laboratory Practice.

  • Responsible for organizing and supervising the technical services provided by vivarium personnel to CPDT, BDTI and Corporate Investigators.

  • Back-up to Attending Veterinarian as point of contact during inspections by AAALAC, USDA, FDA, IACUC, and BD CPDT QA, etc.

  • Responsible for the verification that animals are used in accordance with approved IACUC protocols.

  • Under direction of attending veterinarian, assist in the management of the animal disease, physiology, nutrition, behavior and breeding programs.

  • Under the direction of consulting veterinarian, ensure that the disease surveillance and preventive medicine programs for various laboratory animal species, including, but not limited to, mice, guinea pigs, sheep, swine, and rabbits are executed.

  • Ensure that all Standard Operating Procedures relating to the care and use of laboratory animals are followed.

  • Ensures that the Research Animal Facility is operated in accordance with standards set forth by the USDA, NIH, FDA and AAALAC.

  • Maintains and creates, as needed, record keeping systems for animal inventory supplies, chemicals, per diems, etc.

  • Responsible for requisition and dispensing of supplies necessary for the operation of the Research Animal Facility.

  • Provide animal facility support as required.

  • As needed, sit in as a member of the BDTI Safety Committee, and as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

  • Assist in contract negotiations for consulting and staffing services as needed.

IACUC Coordinator Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee Coordinator and a dotted line report to the IACUC Chair.

  • Maintain all documentation including active and inactive IACUC Protocols; USDA, FDA, and AAALAC inspections;

  • Write and deliver reports to USDA, FDA, and AAALAC as required.

  • Ensure that new employees have all necessary documentation and are properly trained before being added to IACUC Protocols and before receiving vivarium access.

  • Maintain all training records for investigators who work with animals in the vivarium and/or who have access to the vivarium.

  • Manage access requirements for all vivarium users.

  • Meet with investigators to assist in the writing and development IACUC Protocols to ensure that all pertinent regulations are followed.

  • Responsible for the training program for research, surgery, and animal technicians in the Research Animal Facility.

Requirements:

  • Four-Year Degree from accredited University (preferably in a biological science).

  • 5+ years’ experience preferred working with laboratory animals and complete knowledge of the operation and management of laboratory animal facilities.

  • Mustbe certified or hold AALAS certification at the Technologist level.

  • 3-5 years of previous lab animal supervisory experience preferred.

  • Experience with writing protocols and SOP’s preferred.

  • Demonstrated budget and record management experience preferred.

  • Experience working in a GLP environment preferred.
