Within BD Medication and Delivery Solutions (MDS) Research & Development, the associate in this position will be part of the Advanced Access Device Product Development team. The team is seeking a very hardworking and passionate individual to help us identify and implement innovative solutions to address current and future health care needs in the Vascular Access markets. The associate will join a New Product Development team to plan, design and coordinate the development, testing, and implementation of antimicrobial combination devices. The ideal candidate has industry experience with leveraging bioanalytical test methods successful design verification and regulatory submission of drug delivery devices. Responsibilities and competencies include but not limited to the following:

Product & Process Design and Development

  • Engineer robust and manufacturable products through strong understanding and application of engineering fundamentals

  • Use Design For Six Sigma (DFSS) and For Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) methodologies to efficiently detect potential failure modes and retire risks that impact investment, return, and launch predictability

  • Develop and define analytical test methods to assess antimicrobial efficacy. Oversee testing and perform data analysis of results.

  • Solid understanding of, and industry experience with coating processes, compounding, spray coating, imbibing, etc.

  • Coordinate and carry out qualification and validation activities for new products, processes, changes and transfers as required.

  • Supervise technicians as required, to complete assigned projects.

  • Interface with personnel from R&D, Device Molding, Quality, Manufacturing, Assembly Technology and outside vendors.

  • Participate in the evaluation and assessment of new technologies, intellectual property, products, processes and industry trends that can or have the potential to impact our global business

  • Develop design verification traceability matrices and associated requirements analysis

  • Write detailed technical reports based on design verification analysis/testing for design changes and product design activities

  • Contribute to a culture of innovation by proactively generating novel concepts for new products and enhancements to current product performance.

  • Understand customer needs through literature review, customer interviews, direct observation, competitive analysis, prototype evaluation, and clinical/simulated use studies.

  • Translate customer needs into engineering requirements into specific product, packaging and process specifications

  • Ensure compliance with BD quality policies, procedures and practices as well as with all local, state, federal and BD safety regulations, policies and procedures

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, or Biomedical) is required. A Master’s degree in engineering is preferred.

  • Minimum of 10 years of broad experience in manufacturing engineering, process design and development, technology transfer, assessment of product manufacturability, industrial engineering, or project engineering. Medical device and process design and development experience related to high-volume manufacturing is strongly preferred.

  • Experience with antimicrobial combination device design, design verification, and registration is strongly preferred.

  • Experience working in a development environment, with an understanding of process design, process capability and manufacturing cost analysis

  • Experience with Statistical Analysis software, SolidWorks, Visio, Microsoft Office and MS Project preferred.

  • Travel up to 25%

Experience to include:

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver robust products and processes by following a focused design process such as Design for Six Sigma

  • Demonstrated ability to use statistical tools, computer analysis and engineering fundamentals to support sound engineering judgment. SolidWorks, Minitab, and FEA (Abaqus / Fluent) experience is preferred.

  • Strong design control experience

  • Experience writing invention disclosures, patent applications, patents, and publications

  • Strong understanding of failure theory and modes for plastics, elastomers, and metals due to static and time-variable loading conditions

  • Experience with contact and non-contact metrology

  • Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing and assembly processes, particularly those of solvent-based coatings, plastic extrusion, plastic injection molding, metal stamping and automated assembly techniques, including solvent bonding, adhesive bonding, ultrasonic welding, and interference-fitting.

  • Experience with manufacturing process validation including strategy development, First Article Inspection, Factory Acceptance Testing, and IQ/OQ/PQ’s.

  • Knowledge of disciplined product development processes, regulatory and quality requirements such as 21CFR820.30, ISO 10555,ICH Q1A, etc.
