Job Description Summary
The Associate Director, Research Chemistry will be responsible for leading a team of research chemists in the development of novel fluorescent reporters. Candidate will need to shape an expanding team to deliver on an aggressive set of short and long term objectives. This team will be accountable for driving the front end of the innovation funnel within the Sirigen and New Dye Development teams and will be expected to generate and successfully transfer a number of new designs every year to satisfy a demanding pipeline. Candidate will be expected to champion new ideas and innovative approaches through constructive challenge and stimulate others to do the same. The successful candidate will instill a culture of innovation while demonstrating an ability to consistently deliver against key milestones and business objectives. He/She will be responsible for the transfer of new products/prototypes to the Process Development and Production teams and actively support any troubleshooting activities as required. Candidate will routinely advise on technical problems and participate in both strategic and tactical planning activities. He/she participates in technology strategy development, portfolio planning, requirements gathering, and product development initiatives per direction of the Associate Director of R&D Chemistry.
Critical for success will be the ability to effectively communicate and interact with other R&D leaders and to influence both internal stakeholders and key external partners/collaborators. The role will require structured feedback between the chemistry, conjugation and biological applications as well as constructive dialog with the Marketing team to ensure the team is focused on the correct targets. A strong emphasis will be placed on improving the organization, efficiency and teamwork within the group. This will involve the development, implementation and enforcement of improved systems for managing data and development histories. The ideal candidate should be well versed in the development of fluorescence biological detection probes. The successful candidate will also have a strong external focus and will be expected to drive technology sensing and sourcing activities in line with the business strategy. Role will require establishing and maintaining relationships with external collaborators, consultants and CROs.
Responsible for retaining, motivating, developing, and coordinating a team to effectively execute the Research chemistry strategy within BD Life Sciences. Set the example for R&D leadership through commitment to associate development and teamwork and build a for effective leadership succession.
Responsible for guiding the team in establishing highly effective working relationships with key functions such as Business Development, Marketing, Quality and Operations.
Coordinate and provide structured feedback between chemistry, conjugation and applications team. Ensure robust communication and collaboration with the other Sirigen chemistry teams including process development, analytical chemistry and operations. Serve as a major contributor to the Sirigen leadership team.
Contribute to strategic and tactical planning efforts and drive the continual evolution of the business’s new dye and reagent roadmaps.
Provide solutions to a variety of technical problems of high scope and complexity.

Participate in the sensing and sourcing of new dye technologies in partnership with Business Development.
Engage subject matter experts in the team to scale both execution and innovation.
Prepare and oversee the preparation of technical plans, reports, protocols and analyses of R&D projects and processes. Generate and deliver management reports including summaries of progress against objectives, outstanding risks, and financial implications, as appropriate.
Ensure team is delivering high quality documentation of all early stage development activities in accordance with the business’s phase gate development processes.
Keep abreast of technical knowledge in the field and remain current on searching and assessing the relevant literature to discover and prioritize new targets and approaches.
Maintain a global customer centric perspective by continuously engaging externally with researchers, collaborators and customers.
Assure compliance with all local, state, federal, and BD policies/procedures regulations associated with quality, regulatory, safety, HR, etc. and promote a safe work environment.
Education and Experience:
Minimum of MS in Polymer, Organic, or Biological Chemistry. PhD preferred
Minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible, relevant experience in the Life Sciences industry.
Prior people leadership experience with a proven track record in successful talent acquisition, management and development required.
Demonstrated experience creating R&D work environments where innovation can flourish.
Prior leadership in the development of life science, clinical and/or medical products.
Knowledge and Skills:
Deep understanding of synthetic chemistry enabling independent problem solving.
Effective organization, planning and goal setting
Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects in a fast-paced environment
Experience working in and managing a team in a wet chemistry lab
Proactive associate development and performance management
Good judgment and demonstrated decision-making
Ability to develop and report on complex structure/property studies
Experience with UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, FPLC/HPLC/GPC equipment, common biochemistry purification methods (ion exchange, SEC, affinity, etc.) as well as column chromatography of organic compounds (Flash, prep-HPLC, etc.)
Knowledgeable in common bioconjugation reactions, particularly those used to modify antibodies and proteins preferred
Experience working with external partners, consultants and CROs
