Job Description

BD is currently seeking a Senior Director of R&D for the Worldwide Infusion Preparation & Delivery (IPD) platform. The role is the R&D partner to the platform VP/GM and key member of the leadership team and is accountable to ensure that the innovation strategy and portfolio supports the $1.3B platform’s business and financial objectives.

The successful candidate will assume direct and matrixed leadership of large, geographically distributed cross-functional teams, directing them to reach progressive milestones in a cost effective and timely manner. They will build and scale systems, processes, capabilities, and structures to drive product development discipline, technical rigor, customer centricity and external focus and partnerships where needed.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Partner with the platform leadership team to define and implement the innovation strategy, portfolio prioritization and execution.

  • Responsible for front end innovation, new product development, cost improvement and sustainability.

  • Ensure timely and robust delivery of the product development portfolio, driving execution across functions and sites.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other functions and teams as needed to ensure effective and compliant commercialization of new products.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with the Operations, Quality and Supply Chain functions to ensure effective execution of design transfer and to make sure ongoing manufacturing needs are met.

  • Manage capital and operating budgets ensuring pipeline delivery.

  • Attract, develop, and retain strong talent required to execute the strategic plan and provide for succession planning.

  • Drive effectiveness and continuous improvement of systems and procedures to ensure compliance to applicable regulatory standards.

Professional Qualifications / Education

The successful candidate will have

  • a proven record of product development and organizational leadership in the medical device industry with a minimum of fifteen years of experience and at least five of those leading R&D for a complex product portfolio for a $500M+ business.

  • demonstrated proficiency with all aspects of product development including design, development, verification and validation and other issues relevant to the final commercialized product.

  • solid R&D experience employing modern, lean product development methodologies across large multi-disciplinary teams.

  • an Undergraduate degree in an engineering field is required; an MS or Doctoral degree is highly preferred and an MBA desirable.
