BD Life Sciences – Senior Staff Scientist, Single Cell Multiomics

The Senior Staff Scientist will be responsible for initiating and driving product development projects in single cell multiomics and genomics. They will lead the development and evaluation of new assays, products, product improvements, workflows, and instrument protocols on the Rhapsody Single Cell platform with a focus on protein detection via antibody-conjugated oligonucleotides. Other responsibilities include design requirements, experimental direction and methodology for assay, product and protocol development, including product specifications, test plans, verification/validation plans. Oversees, evaluates, explains, and presents product development experimental results of high complexity. The successful candidate will use independent judgment to adapt and modify standard assay development techniques to solve difficult assay or protocol challenges. They will be the technical lead on product development initiatives, and routinely participate in technology strategy development, requirements capturing, and test plan management.

Primary duties include the following:

  • Represents the R&D function as the Core Team R&D Lead in support of product development programs

  • Provides technical leadership and expertise to programs, including concept/design, product development, and commercialization efforts

  • Designs test plans and experiments for R&D lab personnel in the feasibility, development, and verification of new assays and protocols

  • Plans, leads, summarizes, and presents R&D deliverables at all phases of the product development process. Failure to achieve results or erroneous decisions may cause delays in program schedules

  • Leads the troubleshooting and risk assessment activities for projects

  • Ensures program success by working cross functionally within scM R&D, including Engineering, Bioinformatics, and Program Management, and with Marketing, Applications R&D and Medical Affairs

  • Participates in development of bench-marking analysis and experimental studies of competitor products to ensure market competitiveness

  • Maintains strong understanding of state-of-the-art science and technology development in the industry

  • May participate in the hiring, supervision, and development of Scientists and Senior Scientists

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related biological science discipline with at least 10 years of demonstrated ability or Ph. D. with 8+ years of experience in commercial genomic assay product development

  • Expert knowledge of NGS, bioinformatics, biostatistical methods and data analysis experience required

  • A minimum of 8 years experience working in cross-functional commercial genomic assay product development teams required

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong, proven knowledge in product development and design control

  • Experience in development of genomic assays, test method development, QC method development, using a broad range of genomic instrumentation (PCR, qPCR, nucleic acid quantitation, NGS)

  • Knowledge of analysis methods for single cell and/or genomics data, including statistical analysis methods

  • Strongrelationship-builder,with a consistent record of leading and collaborating in teams and across functions

  • Ability to influence through effective communication

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills

  • Able to lead and excel in a highly matrixed and cross-functional environment

  • Self-motivated with a strong sense of urgency and willing to take hands-on work

  • Experience with antibody production and conjugation, or protein purification is helpful

  • Experience in immunology and flow cytometry highly desirable
