The molding staff manufacturing engineer will work under the Manufacturing Technology Innovation team to support manufacturing molding technology development for the Infusion Specialty Disposables Business. The Staff Engineer will plan, design and coordinate the implementation of manufacturing systems and related activities in any of the plants to support the ultimate objective of 100% equipment up-time and zero product defects. Lead projects and initiate cost savings opportunities. The Staff Engineer is responsible for the molding technology portion of the introduction of new products into production (DFM, manufacturing process design, equipment technical specification, construction follow-up, machine acceptance and process development), support of existing products (resin changes, continuous improvement) and the molding process technology transfer to production plants.

Responsibilities:

Accountable for molding process development from design through market launch to meet worldwide Infusion Specialty Disposables business objectives. Work closely with Design, R&D, Quality, Procurement and Manufacturing Plants to implement manufacturing technology.

  • Develops capital and product cost analysis; writes and submits capital appropriations; author’s machine specifications and acceptance protocols to purchase molding cell equipment; manages vendors in the design, development and implementation of molding cells.

  • Works with product design and development teams to ensure robust manufacturability of new products.

  • Develops process conditions to achieve a capable and stable process that fulfills product requirements.

  • Applies six-sigma and lean manufacturing methodologies to ensure optimization of new and existing product lines.

  • Supports manufacturing plants in cost reduction, standardization and equipment upgrade projects.

  • Participate in the evaluation and assessment of new technologies, new materials, intellectual property, products, processes and industry trends that can or have the potential to impact our global business.

  • Identify best-in-class industry molding and auxiliary equipment and work with vendors and plants to develop partners and establish relationships.

  • Ensure efficient and effective transition from technology development to product development to high volume manufacturing in locations throughout the world.

  • Initiate cost savings opportunities.

  • Utilize CAD/CAM, mold flow and CFD techniques, state-of-the art productivity tools along with mold cavity process monitoring instrumentation.

  • Coo rdinate and carry out qualification and validation activities for new products, processes as required.

  • Develops specifications and acceptance protocols for new molding processes or existing processes to purchase production equipment.

  • Work with the extrusion experts within BD to drive safety programs, best practices and cost savings.

  • Comply with all local, state, federal, and BD safety regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Comply with all local BD quality policies, procedures, and practices through consistent app lication of sound quality assurance principles.

  • Ability to clearly communicate ideas and knowledge (upward and downward) to other individuals and teams - both in writing and verbally.

Deliverables:

  • Completion of Individual Impact Goals (IIGs).

  • Delivery of new equipment and process development on time.

  • Manages assigned projects, using advanced project management tools, providing tracking and regular updates of project plan and project budget.

  • Delivery of new equipment on budget.

  • Adherence to GPDS guidelines for new products.

Education and experience requirements:

  • BS degree in Engineering, scientific discipline, or a related field, or sufficient on-the-job experience and high school diploma / GED

  • Ten years of broad experience in molding process development, manufacturing engineering, molding equipment specification, technology transfer and assessment of product manufacturability.

  • Ability to execute scientific molding principles with a full understanding of DOE processes and statistical software(s) like Minitab

  • Experience in metrology and development of fixtures and measurement methods highly desirable

  • Ability to interpret, edit and correct part drawings and in addition complete and/or critically evaluate molding simulations

  • Experience working in a development environment, with an understanding of process design, process capability and manufacturing cost analysis

  • Medical device industry experience preferred

  • Experience developing molding process for high volume manufacturing processes.

  • Strong analytical and empirical skills.

  • Proficient in advanced tools for analytically modeling (such as Six Sigma certification).

  • Must have strong interpersonal skills.

  • Language: English – primary, Spanish – secondary (optional)

About 20% trav el required, primarily to the BD plant in Tijuana
