Job Description Summary

The Staff Scientist is responsible for technical leadership of projects to develop new point-of-care assays for human in vitro diagnostic use, using nucleic acid isolation, amplification, and detection technologies. Works with a high degree of independence to plan and execute experiments for the design, development, integration, and qualification of assays and/or specimen processing workflows. Applies expert knowledge to analyze, interpret and communicate results to a range of scientific and non-technical stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Applies expert knowledge of a broad range of techniques in molecular biology and chemistry to execute overall project assignments. Contributes significantly to projects in the area of specialty through original/novel/innovative input.

  • Formulates and conducts systematic investigation of problem areas of considerable scope and complexity which must be approached through a series of complex and conceptually related studies.

  • Develops and/or adapts procedures to meet specific objectives and solve problems.

  • Conceptualizes, prioritizes and schedules project deliverables. Determines trade-offs between product features, product cost & manufacturability, project delivery, and resource availability.

  • Interprets experimental results to determine appropriate course of action. Acts as a sounding board for testing scientific hypotheses and as a stimulus for the highest caliber of scientific rigor.

  • Summarizes results in written and oral reports for departmental and interdepartmental reviews and/or for external publication.

  • Writes documents for Design Input, Design Verification, Design Validation, and Design Transfer.

  • Interfaces with other facilities and corporate partners to facilitate product development.

  • Is responsible for the maintenance of complex laboratory equipment and facilities.

  • Maintains current knowledge of major technological and scientific developments in molecular diagnostics, and leverages this knowledge within responsibility areas.

  • Provides technical consultation on the application of new technology to the business strategy.

  • Interfaces with other departments and internal/external partners to facilitate product development.

  • Publishes and/or submits patent applications in area of expertise.

  • Establishes and implements SOPs for manufacturing processes and manufacturing equipment.

  • Might direct the activities of team members at the Scientist I, Scientist II, and Senior Scientist levels, and assist in development and performance reviews.

  • Might prepare and maintain bacterial and viral cultures, and perform quantitation of organisms for downstream experimental use.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Expertise in a range of techniques in molecular biology including nucleic acid extraction and amplification is required. Meticulous technique in handling of nucleic acids is required.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new scientific and technological approaches.

  • Working knowledge of scientific method, experimental design, data analysis, and results interpretation. Understanding of the theory of measurement, sources of error, and comparative advantages of different methodologies.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply innovative approaches to product development.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team, under direction, and independently.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Capable of balancing multiple priorities and working under deadline pressure.

Education and Experience:

  • PhD in Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Bio/Biomedical Engineering, or related discipline – or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum of 4 years of directly relevant experience in clinical assay development or related field.

  • Work experience in a laboratory requiring meticulous technique in the handling of nucleic acids.

  • Experience in processing clinical specimens for the recovery of nucleic acids, together with a strong background in microbiology, virology, and/or clinical laboratory science is preferred.

  • Experience with growth and enumeration of bacteria and viruses is preferred.

  • Experience in diagnostic product development under Design Control is preferred.

  • Experience handling infectious biological samples and working in a cGMP environment are preferred.
