About the role:

As a member of the Electrical & Firmware Engineering Team at the Associate Principal level, you will be responsible for the architecting, design, and implementation of embedded software, hardware, and firmware solutions for BD Life Science’s Flow Cytometry product line. Successful candidates will thrive on applying their broad and deep engineering problem-solving skills to embedded development and architecture and work in an interactive and collaborative development environment where overcoming technical challenges is routine. As an Associate Principal Engineer, you will be providing technical leadership and having a significant impact on BD’s products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Architect, design, develop, and implement embedded solutions for BDB’s Flow Cytometry Product line in close collaboration with cross-functional project teams

  • Understand business goals and link them to design directions and product architecture and promote short-term solutions that support long-term product vision and strategies.

  • Improve BD’s development processes and quality by providing strong technical leadership in developing and implementing quality-focused best-practice methodologies for FW, SW, and HW development.

  • Act as technical leader and mentor across the organization on a wide variety of technical topics including design for manufacturability, design for test, and continuous quality improvement.

  • Be a subject matter expert and resource regarding FW solutions, toolchains, methodologies, and architectures, involving multiple development languages.

  • Be a subject matter expert and resource regarding programmable logic development.

  • Develop strong networks both within and outside of BD to drive architecture decisions based on a customer and quality focused mindset.

  • Provide technical guidance to project team towards optimized product development outcomes with respect to customer needs and new applications

  • Ensure quality of work product by following standards and best practices such as MISRA and IEC.

  • Generate documentation to support regulatory filings and internal reports and specifications.

  • Supports the work in formal Verification and Validation activities.

  • Provide R&D input on CAPA reports and post product release support to BD Manufacturing worldwide.

  • Follow design, quality, and safety guidelines based on GMP, FDA, and ISO guidelines and related BD Quality and Safety Standards and Practices

About You:

You are a talented and experienced engineer with significant experience developing successful products in the field of Flow Cytometry. You have a broad background in multiple disciplines related to system architecture, firmware development, and embedded logic development. You thrive in a team environment and are excited to work in the medical device industry because you realize that your work will positively impact patients’ qualities of life. You can handle multiple, ongoing projects and are comfortable dealing with different prioritizations. You are constantly looking for ways to improve the quality of the work and of the development processes that BD uses, and you want to take the lead.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.

  • Minimum of 15+ years of experience in developing architectures, hardware, firmware, and software for embedded systems.

  • Strong skills with C++ development for embedded systems. Experience with Visual Studio or similar development IDE.

  • Solid background developing FPGA and other programmable-logic based solutions.

  • Proven ability to do “clean-sheet” architecture development to take a product from concept through manufacturing release.

  • Able to propose multiple solutions, describe the pros and cons of each, and make the right technical decisions while considering business related factors such as cost, complexity, component availability, manufacturing, etc.

  • Hardware bring-up and debug required, Bare hardware boot processes and firmware. Hands on experience troubleshooting firmware/hardware interfaces using test equipment such as logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and debuggers.

  • Familiarity and experience with Agile/Scrum software development methodologies and Issue/Task/Bug tracking systems.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in cross-functional and cross-geographical multi-disciplinary teams

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Manages time effectively and efficiently and able to context-switch as necessary to deal with new issues.

  • Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills.

  • Able to bring clarity to ambiguous situations.

Desirable:

  • Experience with working in a regulated industry strongly preferred.

  • Experience with photo-detection technology strongly desired.

  • Experience with memory management, interrupt controller and bootloader strongly desired.

  • Experience with Azure DevOps.
