Job Description Summary

The Instrumentation Technician is required to maintain schedules for preventative maintenance inspections and installations and respond to all repair activities for R&D instruments as assigned. The Instrumentation Technician must successfully troubleshoot, repair and verify instrument performance on all activities and completes instrument installations, field updates and preventative maintenance inspections in a timely manner. This position requires timely and accurate submittal of administrative duties including preventative maintenance forms and qualification forms.

Key Qualifications:

  • Electronic Theory and Troubleshooting.

  • Strong understanding of analog and digital electronics and the demonstrated ability to apply concepts in troubleshooting to determine defective components on instrument. Competent with disassembling an instrument and mechanical functions.

  • Computer hardware and software.

  • Diagnoses operating system problem using utilities for both BD and non-BD applications. Troubleshoots networking problems within a network system consistent with BD service repair philosophy.

  • Oral and writing skills

  • Competent in writing documents, monthly reports, and other required administrative tasks using proper grammar, spelling and punctuation

  • Competent in preparing worksheets and written documents using Microsoft Office programs. Competent in the use of system email and use of internet and intranet services.

  • Fluent in communication to customers, peers, management and internal associates and works to build synergies. Has effective listening skills.

  • Organizing and planning

  • Effective time management planning of all work activities to ensure timely completion of all scheduled and unscheduled events for instrumentation.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Successfully completes all formal training on core clinical and/or research BD Instruments

  • Capable of interpreting instrument performance verification data used as an indicator of instrument optimization and takes corrective action when required

  • Repairs instruments of moderate complexity by troubleshooting, repairing, ensuring an acceptable level of instrument performance is achieved and limited assistance. Works toward repair metrics as defined by the Lab Management and within the scope of the position.

  • Schedules and performs installation, preventative maintenance inspections, reliability updates and works to achieve measurable goals for these activities as set by the Organization

  • Successfully completes project assignments under Lab Management direction

  • Participates in development of team goals and objectives and produces results that contribute to the team’s core objectives

  • Routinely communicates as appropriate to peers, management on daily activities, critical situations, and business opportunities

  • Maintains a professional image at all times through dress, behavior, oral and written communications

  • Complies with all Quality, ISO and GMP regulations including routine updates of SOPs, WIs, training logs and desktop procedures as required by Organization

  • Follows BD Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) policies and procedures for general laboratory safety and takes protective measures while BSL2 laboratories. Takes responsibility for safety in immediate work area. Participates in EH&S training programs. Notifies EH&S and Lab Management of all observed hazardous conditions or unsafe work practices that threaten health and life. May provide recommendations on maintaining the safety of the work environment.

Education and Experience:

  • ​Associates or Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Engineering, or other related technical or biological discipline

  • Previous Flow Cytometry experience highly desirable

  • Proficient with troubleshooting and maintaining medical device such as flow cytometry instruments

  • Familiarity with calibration and maintaining requirements for common lab equipment

  • Must be self-motivated, able to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to apply creative problem-solving skills to novel or complex applications.

  • Demonstrate success leading projects, with the ability to meet technical objectives and solve challenges under conditions of ambiguity and rapid change.

  • Experience working in a Biosafety Level 2 laboratories using universal precautions.
