The Systems Engineering Manager is responsible for leadership and management of a team of engineers and scientists chartered with the architecture, design, integration and characterization of complex cell analysis systems and solutions for both research and clinical diagnostics markets. The system engineering group functions as the hub of product development within the R&D organization defining the direction of product architecture, performance requirements, interfaces, subsystem tradeoffs and traceability of design control requirements. The team has accountability for the design and sustaining for the complex BD Biosciences’ life science systems. The team shepherds products from requirements to breadboards to production. The manager provides leadership to the team that is chartered with maintaining leadership of BD Bioscineces products via innovation, superior performance, customer experience, and quality products. The Manager is expected to continue to develop her/his team, and recruit top talent as necessary.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with program managers and system engineering core team members to ensure proper resourcing, expertise and functional support is provided to each new product development core team.

  • Actively works to attract, recruit, retain and develop top talent to build a best in class capability.

  • Frequently interacts with other senior managers, including Marketing, Program Management, Operations, Quality, Business Platforms, Medical, and Regulatory to ensure that the systems under development meet overall business needs.

  • Manages within budgetary boundaries defined by the fiscal year budget and quarterly forecasts.

  • Works on complex problems where analysis of data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors.

  • Models best in class systems engineering functional excellence, including gathering user perspective and voice of customer

  • Responsible for the stewardship of the SE processes and methodologies, ensuring consistent application across all programs and the continuous improvement of the processes.

  • Participates in Design and Technical Reviews to ensure customers’ needs are satisfied and designs are consistent with systems-level requirement.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of a BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science, Physics or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Prior direct experience in design and development of complex instrumentation and systems in the life sciences industry or related field.

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in a functional leadership role and/or leading a Multidisciplinary Engineering team.

  • Minimum of 3 years' product development experience. Experience in flow cytometry or other clinical/research instrumentation and reagent systems of similar complexity.

  • Education and/or experience in Immunology, Cell Biology or a related scientific discipline highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated team management and leadership skills for complex programs.

  • Willingness to travel up to 10% of the time (global).

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Has up to date Systems Engineering skills and product development knowledge.

  • Ability to create, maintain and improve Systems processes and documents including SOPs and desk procedures.

  • Ability to manage departmental budget, resources and their assignment to multiple programs.

  • Effective interpersonal, leadership and influencing skills

  • Effective organization and planning skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with teams.

  • Demonstrated creative and innovative problem solving ability.

  • Has previous Design Control experience in a regulated environment.

  • Knowledge of Quality Systems Regulations, ISO guidelines, and Good Laboratory Practices.

  • Experience with system development lifecycles and requirements development for complex systems.

  • Has experience with tools for managing customer, system, and subsystem level requirements

  • Experience with requirements development, design & testing.

  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) Green Belt or higher is a plus.
